What ship to buy next? (PvE)

I am a high sec mission runner who got bored of the game and left for a couple of years but has recently returned. After over-estimating my level of retained skill and rashly losing a couple of ships, followed by buying my T3 strat cruiser I have run enough missions to recoup those losses and i'm looking around for the next addition to my personal fleet.

I currently run missions (mostly) in marauder class ships, and own a Kronos (Gallente) and Paladin (Amarr), using hybrids and lasers respectively, with armour-tank fit. However, It is getting kind of old spending 5 mins to kill a BS in the missions that are against pirate factions that aren't very vulnerable to therm/kin and therm/EM, so I am looking for a ship that can change damage types.

I am fully skilled in all relevant Caldari and Minmatar ships, as well as missiles and projectile weapons and shield tanking skills (closing in on 160m SPs). Can someone advise which ship should be my next purchase, or if I should run a new weapon type on on of my existing ships?

Machariel.
Any of the Minmatar battleships.
Any of the Caldari battleships.

I've found a blaster-fit Megathron to be reasonbly effective against angels, because of the sheer amount of damage neutrons do. It requires a lot of manual piloting to be effective, and dual prop mods to control range and angular velocity without capping out.

My personal favorite ship to mission in, is the Golem. With its bonuses you can get very good damage application and you can change the damage type however you like.

There are various fitting posts from monster dps/application/bling fits to some simple ones like the ones below.

Slightly off topic but why return to a game to do the exact same thing that made you quit?

... because I have only ever flown Gallente and Amarr ships (except for frig and cruiser on Caldari when I first started, and a brief stop in a Harpy when I was trying out exploration). Sure, I can look at numbers, I can use the fitting tools, but what I was really looking for is opinions on what feels best to run in - and after a couple of years away I no longer have the same understanding of the ships as I once did, partly due to memory and partly due to changes in the game. We all have our favourite ships. And marauders are so focused on their primary weapon system than I would not get a realistic comparison simply fitting different weapon systems and trying them out.

I like the Vargur if you fly Mauraders. Selectable damage type and immediate application. You get the Machariel on the way to a Vargur which is a great mission and fleet ship.

What about trying something else ? Exploration, PvP fleets, FW, wormspace...
And what about joining a dynamic corporation active in your time zone with whom you could share a project and do things together on a regular basis ? That would greatly increase the chances that you don't get bored this time.

I don't like PvP - never have, even from the very first MMORPG I played (1998 I think it was - Meridian 59). So I suck at it and don't like doing it, plus I get unnaturally tied to my ships and hate losing them :) Once I get more familiar with the game I will probably dust off my Buzzard and branch out into doing exploration again - i did enjoy it, but stopped bothering because if you didn't get on within 30 mins of serverup then all the sites had been accessed already. I am hoping that is something that has changed along the way. We shall see :)

I have a 90m SP industry/mining/research alt on another account (she made my Charon, my Orca and makes all of my rigs and hybrid ammo) but that account is currently not active so maybe industry is the next stage for this toon. I might take another stab at being an itinerant trader and wandering high sec in my Charon looking for bargains in the NPC commodities - I used to like the math involved in that (I am a spreadsheet nerd) - I'd need to get my head around the markets again to find the profitable items, planetary interaction kind of killed that profession back in the day.

There are always options, just gotta find them buried in the sand :) But, missioning is what earns me the money, and I want to make sure I have a couple billion ISK cushion before starting up the hobby projects again - hence the original question to make that part of it faster and easier, even though a new marauder class toy would set me back a month or two.

For long range combat i like the Navy Raven or a Rattlesnake, both with selectable damage types.

For short range combat i would use a Machariel with AC.

If you are not looking for max. isk/hour i would also consider a MWD-fit Typhoon Fleet Issue with Torpedos and heavy drones or a Navy Geddon with MWD, Pulse Laser and heavy drones. I like flying those once in a while.

Given your corp/alliance apparently lives in a C2 Wolf Rayet* class wormhole, perhaps a Svipul or Confessor?

(with C1 & HS statics? Guys, find a better 'hole to live in.......)

Here are my thoughts to add for your consideration.
Before I go on I run missions on a regular basis in all 4 major factions space and there for I am routinely up against all of the various NPC.

Golem, Vargur, Machariel and Rattlesnake are my go to mission ships.

The Golem is prized above all others because it's killing speed is identical in all areas of space and against all NPC. No I did not say it kills the fastest I said it is the most consistent, and for me with the wide range of areas, npc and mission partners I fly with that consistency is worth more than the few minutes I may save in some areas / missions by using another ship.

Vargur, well what can I say flying them is a change up from the Golem and it has some clear advantages depending on your wants / needs. Highly recommended if you like Minmatar ships or auto cannon, never tried one with artillery though so may have to look into that.

Machariel, to me this is the king of the blitz ships and that is exactly what I use it for. It can be a capable all around ship, but I found it lacking in some areas compared to the others so it get's no use outside of blitzing.

Rattlesnake. Great ship, good damage selection and against some NPC it kills the fastest and since I am a drones pilot at heart it does see significant use. The only thing that keeps the Rattle from being my go to ship is the inconsistency in killing speed because of the thermal / kinetic hull bonus.

Rattlesnake-

Not terribly fun but has great resist profile and has selective drone damage, as well i found that thermal missiles are effective against most rats as its usually the 2nd/3rd hole for rats.

Also if you are having DPS issues in marauders...you need to fix your marauder fits. They shouldn't struggle or take 5 minutes to kill a rat in any high-sec mission...

In case target doesn't instapop, add an F-key.

I kept doing it this way all the time, fitting for high RoF, spreading out turrets evenly across cycletime.

Added benefits are high range and low ammo usage.
And it's fun, because it's a glass cannon and thus not boring easymode like in marauders and BS.

As an addendum, you may also find it fun to group your 1400s, and target miners in untanked barges instead

OP this a possible route. You may to spice it up want to go more medium/short range with rapid heavy/heavy drone setup.

I went to this after giving rail kronos a go and its nice. One thing not liked about rail kronos was it got boring. MJD, bastion, snipe. Effective yes...kind of boring though. A route the common MJD snipe (cruise and sentry) rattlesnake may follow if you found snipe boring.



More MR/SR you at least move around a bit. Not omfg exciting but...better way more interesting than mjd snipe for my tastes anyway.

Beyond that the above mentioned exploration bit could be fun. Or a more pve based wh home and run t3's and such more. Get you out of a BS for a bit anyway. Can be a nice thing maybe.
