Ninja Salvagers. Still a viable profession?

It's been a while since I last took a boat out into New Eden and the meatware skills are shot to hell.

So, I thought that it would be a good idea to practise again my scanning skills and what better way there is to do that but to torment Mission Runners by being a Ninja Salvager.

The last time I tried this was years ago and perhaps the highlight was being called "An Elk!" by someone cheesed off with my antics. Anyway, digression aside, I am starting to wonder if hi-sec Ninja Salvaging is done these days.

Is it still done and does anyone have have a half-way modern and up to date decent T1 frigate fit to ease me back into New Eden?

p.s. No, the reason for my absence from the game wasn't because I was staying somewhere secure courtesy of Her Majesty's Pleasure but the fact that the wife and I decided to beetle off for a year in a motorhome and see what we could see.

What's the downside to MTU destroying? Does Concord come a-knocking or does it make one just a legit target for everyone?

Just suspect status, that's all!

Today, I notched up my 100th MTU kill - not much compared to those who've been at it for a lot longer than I, but immensely satisfying nonetheless! The tears are an added bonus, although I have to admit that lately most of my 'clients' have been Russian and whilst their invective was no doubt impressive, it was wasted on me.

Here are a couple of fits you could try - try with a T3D first and then move onto the Tengu as you gain confidence. Adjust to taste; for my needs, I required an all-in-one scanning package with decent DPS and a good-ish tank to deflect incoming fire from both rats and angry locals:

[Jackdaw, Seagull]
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II

5MN Y-T8 Compact Microwarpdrive
Missile Guidance Computer II

Warp Scrambler II
Caldari Navy Medium Shield Extender

Small Low Friction Nozzle Joints I
Small Warhead Calefaction Catalyst I

Mjolnir Rage Rocket x5000
Navy Cap Booster 25 x200
Sisters Combat Scanner Probe x16
Scourge Rage Rocket x2875
Nova Rage Rocket x5000
Inferno Rage Rocket x4500

320 DPS, 1500m/s cold. Not a bad place to start, and cheap if you mess up.

[Tengu, Ahoy Hoy]
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System

Gistum C-Type 50MN Microwarpdrive
Thukker Large Cap Battery
Warp Scrambler II
Stasis Webifier II
Adaptive Invulnerability Field II
'Copasetic' Particle Field Acceleration
Pith X-Type Large Shield Booster

Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II

Tengu Electronics - Emergent Locus Analyzer
Tengu Defensive - Amplification Node
Tengu Engineering - Capacitor Regeneration Matrix
Tengu Offensive - Accelerated Ejection Bay
Tengu Propulsion - Fuel Catalyst

Scourge Javelin Heavy Assault Missile x3000
Sisters Combat Scanner Probe x18
Scourge Rage Heavy Assault Missile x1264

This is what I'm using now (replace the Fuel Catalyst with the Nanofibres subsystem, left over from an old build). 640 DPS with my skills, 1190m/s cold. Cap stable! 965hp every 3 secs - more than enough to tank whatever the room (or the odd irate bear) throws at you.

Thanks ever so much for the replies and for the fits.

I think that when I have time (Real Life is in the way) then I will have a go with these. In the meantime I off practising scanning in a Heron.

Thanks again, muchly appreciated.

Thanks, but it may be something that someone who will get out into New Eden irregularly can do that's a form of interaction with others without needing a Corp.

It's more for that than ISK, to be honest. And, anyway, after all these years I have never had any ISK anyway.

This Jackdaw sounds like a lot of fun. And it's cheap for a new person to skill up to! You just land into a mission and shoot their MTU?

Yeah the cheapness is a v. v. good thing too, particularly if you're new to suspect status and all that!

Pretty much you do exactly what you said! I'd create a bunch of safe spots around the system first though, and when you land in the mission pocket, target the MTU and align to a SS at about 50% velocity...that way, if it's a trap, you can easily skidoo :)

where are good SS positions? Near roid fields or planets?

Those are pretty bad (though easy to create), as anything in a straight line from one celestial to another can be pinpointed quite quickly...instead:

1. Fly from one body to another, dropping a BM (1) on the way
2. Return to the first body, and then fly to another (preferably at a 45 degree-plus angle), and drop another BM (2)
3. Fly to (1). Arrive. Align and fly to (2), dropping a third BM (3).
4. This will be your safe spot.
5. Rinse and repeat for several other spots.

To be fair, this won't really stop a dedicated and experienced scanner with an expanded probe launcher, though if you do create several SSs you can bounce around them waiting for the weapons timer to run out before you dock up.

HTH!

Bumblefck, a question about the Cap Boosters that you have loaded. Where in the Raven fit is the actual Booster?

Or have I missed something blindingly obvious (yet again)?

They go in the Small Ancillary Shield Booster. They are new'sh boosters. They boost more than a standard booster, but when the cap boosters run out they not great and chew cap. The take a long time to relaod.
There is an armor version which uses nanite past

So one shoves Cap Booster charges into a Shield Booster device?

Goodness, this game is hard enough as it is...

But thanks for the reply. Another reason why I was useless at this game: I know nowt.

Yup, keep more in your cargo hold for it to reload once you have used the ones in the module.
If you run out it will still work but put a massive strain on your capacitor.
I lost a tengu the other week because i had forgotten to do this after murdering a miner
and and then ran smack into an angry navy scorpion one of his corpmates was flying,

Make sure you always use Navy Cap boosters too, as they are of a smaller physical size compared to the normal versions, and consequently you can fit more of them in the ancillary booster :)
