Came expecting a terrible rehashed thread regarding the Eve Logo in a mid 80's film (which might or might not be robocop - I can't remember).

Left with a smile. Thank you op. I hope CCP reimburse your time adequately . If you had filed a petition regarding this you would have received an irrelevant stock answer after 10 days.

The sad thing is, CCP sue them and get some money out of it and pour it into CQ and fashion development. Thus stopping another potential internet spaceships game coming out which would then require CCP to pull their thumbs out of their arses and actually work on the core game.

This is pretty common for online games.

One of most popular browser based RTS games ripped a lot of artwork straight out of Civ4.

You know, this whole deal makes me wonder if CCP ever reacted to people making posts like this about Perpetuum ripping off large parts of EVE Online. I saw quite a few threads back in the day, but no dev response... no "we are looking into this", no "they are totally getting sued", no "this is legit, they licensed it", no "they only used non copyrighted stuff". Just no answer at all.

Was there ever a response that I happened to miss?

I'm sticking with my original assumption in saying that it is a small "secret" project funded by CCP in order to milk the people who'd leave EVE over avatars and MT shops, just to troll them.

That would of course be hilarious... but then again, I doubt it would have stayed hidden this long, what with internal mail and newsletter leaks and all that.
