EvE is dying ... as always Blink EvE has a low retention rate. EvE is not perfect, and we know a lot of points for improvements, but more important IMO is the focus on its strengths. Hence here are my two simple questions to new players (subscribed account, not older than 3 months).

1. What brought you to New Eden?

2. What kept you going beyond the magical 14/21/30 days?

Thanks for your enlightening and maybe surprising answers. Big smile

I am a returning player, from way back when BoB was in power, you had to train learning skills and the first Hulkageddon was started.

So I consider my self a new player as SOOO much has changed. What I find funny is even back then in the year 2000. The same topics would pop up ( I am leaving threads, eve is dyeing, the Dev's don't do enough...) seems the same topics in every game.

1. I came back as I now have the money to play long term and wanted a game that was entertaining. I did not want things handed to me, wanted to work for my skills and be challenged. Got sick of the FPS refurbished games and DLC

2. See above.

This is my 3rd foray into Eve...

1, think it's mostly out of the habit of playing mmos for almost 20 years and I'm bored of the current mmos out there. Purchasing Elite Dangerous reignited interest in things space hence I'm here.

2, after a rough start I'm still here. Buying a plex and selling it made things more accessible (but leaves a bad taste in my mouth that it's cost 26 quid in a month. Never had to pay besides a subscription to help me in a mmo before) Setting myself goals whether it be training skills or obtaining new ships keep me occupied.

I think every mmo license now caters for a more casual playerbase. You can see this with accelerated levelling, instant level cap characters, and dropping of subscription requirements. We've all grown up now and have jobs, children etc and easily accessible games via tablets and smartphones all vying for our free time.

I'd like to see CCP expand the pve element of EVE (awaits flames) but I have NO expectations that it will happen. I've dipped my toes into the EVE universe in 13 years and each time on first look it seems no different...even though it has many updates.

I don't understand why CCP doesn't learn from what is happening in the mmo market and make it more appealing. I can only assume they've made their fortune out of the game and doesn't matter if it falls off a cliff

Not a newbie, but I'll answer:

1. Sci-fi and spaceships brought me to the game.

2a. I continued playing past my trial because of the raw potential. I sat there imagining what I could do once I trained this ship and that ship etc. Of course, it would take years to get there. I usually stop playing a game, once I figure out how to "beat" it; actually going through the motions to the end feels like a grind to me. So, with EVE, I started anew, a lot. Every few years.

2b. What kept me playing this last stretch was the corp I was in, which was pretty good, still is. EVE is definitely a game that is much better when you're in a good group. Unfortunately, RL intervened and prevented much play, but I kept the skill training going.

CCP are typical devs - they love trying out new technology / new code / new things, and get really lazy when it comes to maintaining or keeping a game going. So, from the beginning, they decided it would be a lot less ::effort:: to just code a bunch of ships and keep them balanced, than to have to come up with a new expansion (full story arc, new ships, new loot, new NPCs, new skills, etc.) every 6 months like WoW did.

This is why they will expand the PVE, but only as much as you've seen; it is still a core principle of the game that they will let players create the "content", with CCP just putting in the minimal effort of keeping the ships balanced. Minimal effort, in this case, means a smaller dev team being able to maintain a large complex game.

They've seen what lack of player interest means for the game; but it's not PVE, it's PVP. When there are no wars, they lose subscriptions and money.

As far as making the game more appealing, they won't be able to compete with the mass appeal (and effort) of SWTOR and WoW. And they've seen what the effort to bring out SWTOR was, vs. the failure that it turned out to be after the initial 2-month rush.

I'm in total agreement. Ccp seem to me they just tweak what is already there. I'd love to see similar mission arcs like the SOE and career agents... The frame work is there and they've done it once. Missions could reward implants, ships etc giving a purpose or a sense of progression. My next project is to buy and equip a Raven...with an estimated cost of over 300 million. I've been on holiday this week so played more and only made around 40 million. With my plex sold I can afford to do this...but it's not nice knowing this could be taken away from me in an instant.

The cynic in me thinks Ccp know I'm the sort of gamer that will have to resort to buying plex to finance their dreams...much easier for them instead of coding a few missions

Well, keep in mind that high-sec was really intended as no more than a newbie area, and you're not going to get good returns doing solo activities in high-sec. Null or wormhole space, with friends, on the other hand, hundred million per day is easy. Risk vs. reward and all that.

Nobody's kicking you out of high-sec, just like nobody's kicking you out of WoW's newbie zone, but you won't get rich there. This game is intended to be a strategy RTS game, played as a member of an alliance, out there in the PVP areas. It's also a zero-sum game, more or less; only a few of the players will truly strike it rich (or successful), and they'll do so at the expense of others, who will simply function as 'prey'.

I like that it's as full on or casual as you like, as there is no story thread..it's easy to take a few days off and come back. It's very easy to loose the thread of things in other MMO's, but in Eve, due to the lack of story..that doesn't pose a problem.

I would also like to see the introduction of 'missions' etc, and again, like a previous poster, I expect that to earn me some smack talk.

I do like Eve though, it really is quite different from everything else.

I'm not sure what to think of the gate camping and ganking of innocent miners..on one hand I GET that Eve is lawless and open to all play types, on the other, I can see how it would drive away a good number of new players.

Evolution WILL happen, and it's probably pre-ordained where that will take Eve.

I am still finding my feet, and love Eve as it is, if it does not change then I won't be sad..if it does, and it brings in something more for the single players and rp'ers, then that'd be good too, as long as the balance is kept so that everyone can still enjoy the experience.
