Advice requested on kiting

Hi,

I've been doing missions in a Vexor NI, with as heavy a tank as I can manage, stable cap, mainly drones (T1) for offense and a couple of lasers 'cos I don't like empty slots. I have 2 drone damage boosters (is that the correct name?), and a 100 MN afterburner that gives me over 1000 mps speed. At the correct range I take very little damage. This is working well, but ...

My problem is maintaining a desired range when there are multiple enemy ships. It's easy enough with orbit and maintain range for the ship I am attacking, but once that is destroyed I often find one or more of the other ships have moved closer than I want and I have to pick something new to orbit, plus having a time of vulnerability while I build up the range again.

This has not been a big problem so far (L3 missions) as I seem to have enough tank and repair capability to survive while I take all the ships down, but I strongly suspect I would not do so well in PVP.

Can anyone give me some pointers, please? A link to an existing write up would be sufficient.

My advice is stop expecting to make afk isk. Pilot manually and work on your awareness. That will be your best tank.

You will probably want to pvp eventually so better start a more hands on approach as soon as possible.

ditch 'em. they're doing nothing good for you except use cap, pg and cpu.

That 100MN prop mod does tend to gimp your VNI's handling a little.

The trick is to pulse the prop mod when you want to change orbit. Turn it off, readjust your course once it switches off, turn it on again. With some practise, you won't lose too much speed.

posting your full fit would be handy.

I'm puzzled.

AFK = "away from keyboard". I'm not, I'm sitting right there.

ISK? That's not related to my problem, but maybe I've misunderstood something?

"Pilot manually"? I assume you mean not using the "orbit" and "range" keys? Sounds good, but I don't know how to do that. Can you help, with a link maybe?

OK. Any suggestions for the two empty slots?

Yes, I know the drones are kind of messy, I just threw in what I had to get started and intend to adjust.

Can you help with the manual piloting that Kethen alludes to?

Thanks for the advice so far.

Leave said slots empty and use the fitting room elsewhere.

Try this instead. I confess I've never used it for missions, but it can clear out 0.0 anomalies rather easily. Use the Rigs slots for faction appropriate resists and pack faction appropriate drones for your missions. So, for fighting Guristas rats, use 2x Thermal + 1x Kinetic resist rigs and launch Wasp heavy drones. Get some Navy drones until you can use T2, they are markedly better than plain T1.

If you need to face multiple different factions with wildly different damage profiles, this fit may not work all that well.

Just because you can use cruiser to run L3 mission it does not mean that you should. Missioning is about how quick you can handle the job. So you will not lose too much isk/time value. Usuall rule is cruiser for L2, battlecruiser for L3 and battleship for L4.

Since you seems to be low in skills you can think about using Gnosis.
For L4 you can concider Dominix and than Rattlesnake / Machariel combo (full clear / blitz). Finally you will be probably use the tool, that CCP itself invented for missioning - marauders.
In mission you should always adjust you damage to rats. Use eve-survival web page to fing out what kind of damage you should apply. Dominix will allow you use sentry drones of a proper kind (optimal is between 100 - 150 km depending of fit, skills and drones used). Rattlesnake adds some serios missile damage on the top of that and Machariel uses projectile machine guns to select the damage type. Only Golem and Vargur will let you select the damage, other two marauders are pretty much limited (though Kronos still can use drones).

Yes, I've had this (no doubt good) advice before, and I am currently fitting a Myrmidon for L3. I need some more skills for the equipment, so I have a wait time for that. I was able to fit a VNI right away, so I did that to fill in.

Mind you, I guess I should note that ISK is not my primary concern. Enjoying the game is, so simply following a "tested and true" path may not be what I will enjoy most. Sometimes it's fun just seeing how much I can squeeze out of a "lower" level ship, and learning in the process.

To everyone, thanks for all the advice, which is never wasted.

On the other hand, my main request seems to have been missed, except for Kethen who unfortunately didn't expand on a very general comment. Maybe he will?

I'm looking for techniques that will allow me to maintain an optimum range when engaging multiple enemies. Kethen suggested that I should fly "manually" which sounds interesting, but I don't know how to do that.

Can anyone help?

i love the oversized ab vni, its awesome, but with that, you simply cant use the orbit button, you need to manual fly it.
dont pulse the ab, keep it on, its the tank of the ship. low sig, high speed.
make the ship cap stable with ab on, and the manual fly is:
turn the camera in the direction you wanna fly, then double click in the space. thats it
if you have the angular velocity on your overview, you can see if a ship has a low angular, and you know, you need to increase it
dont fly lvl 4 with the vni. a year ago, i easily did lvl 4s with a vni + geckos, but the geckos were 25-35 mils / piece at that time.
now they are 100+.
it means, you want a gila. btw, even the gila has trouble with some lvl 4s. so, its really important, if you wanna do lvl 4 missions with a cruiser, you need to be good at manual flying. lately im using a gila, or a blaster deimos ( it has insane reps you know :D )
but if you want to do missions in a relativly safe way, then battleships. the missioning with a cruiser thing needs manual piloting skills, fitting skills, and piloting skills like if you need to run, you have to know it, and you have to know, how to do it...
never ever engage a pvp ship with a pve ship. even if its just a silly frig. ( a vni, or a gila can easily handle them, but without pvp experience, you propably just gonna die )
so, the point i wanted to make is, the oversized ab is a good thing, even if its got nerfed. i lost only one pvp oversized ab vni in pvp, and i flew a lot. ( i lost more pve vnis in losec, or null, but only one pvp fit i lost )
the thing is, you need to know the weakness ot the fit like of this.
and the ship dont care about empty slots, if its effective in that way. dont fit **** just because why not. fit some ****, if you propably need it, but if there is no way to use the crap, then just dont fit it.
btw, without the geckos, the vni is not as awesome as it could be. fly it until you lose it, and use a silly gila.

Manual piloting refers to double clicking in space to control where your ship will go. In tactical mode (one of the buttons left of your HUD) you get a small blue circle now when you double click in space to show you where you are heading.

You can use this to keep enemies flying directly at you ( so you hit as well as you can) while you've got traversal against them so their shots miss or glance off you.

To start with, don't use 100 MN ab. It is battleship module, you can fit it, but it performance is not that good on smaller hull.

If you need to open up distance quickly and you are not doing afk, use mwd instead.

The other thing. As you increase your main and support skills, you will become more deadly which will speed things up.

A 100mn ab is absurd tank on a cruiser, which is why its getting used, you get mwd speed without the sig bloom so npcs hit you for nothing. Gun ones miss and missile ones do almost no dps.

Without it youd need to fit actual tank, which kills your dps.

Until you end up making an actual turn followed by a wtf happened sensation due to no tank. Ppl do it effectively no doubt but its terrible advice for a new player who hardly ever clicked in space. Also to do it effectivly you Will never be anywhere close to full speed and for that reason you could just aswell use a normal ab.

About gimping dps. You forget that oversize needs fittingspace.

Not on the VNI. No highs being needed clears up absurd fitting space.
