Calling CCP out on lack of commitment to Game Universe History

Over the last few months I have watched with concern that the eveonline.com homepage has steadily been stripped of all references to eve history, backstory and lore from its official page.

Even on the the community page..... the main chronology of years and the history of organizations ... its all gone. The chronicles and short storys while very well written are hardly easily digested content for new players.. the basic race and timeline description is inadequate. They need context which the chronology of years and history of organizations provided.

For example how would a new player know who "Upwell Consortium"or the 'Serpentis Corporation" are... or the history behind carolines star and thera... Where can I find information on "drifters"....

CCP you claim that EvE is the worlds largest depository of living science fiction yet your commitment to chronicling that fiction and storing the history of lore and player created history in a accessible way is woeful.

Players understood that you couldn't maintain the eve wiki with all the changes to ships and items etc in each patch...

You could and should maintain the historical and lore information that was contained in the wiki. Its not living science fiction if your not providing a accessible location for the history of the universe or at the very least a basic timeline.

Otherwise all this talk of "living science fiction" just becomes what it currently is... marketing bu$s$it. Perhaps you could use all that money your CEO boasts about earning on skill injectors to hire an extra web developer and archivist.

The YARR program.. player volunteers to help with maintaining history and lore needs to rebooted and re-energized.

A new official website needs to be created to store the history of the universe.

Also the data dump of the old eve wiki is now broken on fuzzworks.. Cry

CCP Delegate Zero is presently working on a lore depository replacement for EVElopedia. Admittedly it would have been better if CCP had left EVElopedia up until the replacement was ready, but unfortunately EVE is a game company first and I presume they thought the outdated mechanics data on the wiki was causing problems for new players.

Until the replacement comes up, Backstage maintains a mostly complete copy of EVElopedia at http://wiki.eve-inspiracy.com/ . Unfortunately there's still some articles that are missing, but it does include most of the old articles.

For articles not backed up on Backstate don't forget to check the Wayback Machine. Smile

Im glad its being worked on and great to hear that the many pages of lore and history have not been lost.

I really would like to see CCP give history more attention.. not just lore but player history. A timeline of major conflicts, some profiles on the major corporations and personalities involved etc. A space for corps to add in their own history should they choose.

As I said above its major focal point of their marketing and the game world. Most of CCPs player history initiatives have been marketing based.. with a short term focus and then removal of the content once that "marketing campaign" has concluded.

Eve is one of the largest sources of living science fiction. Long term history preservation and accessibility deserve more than a single dev (regardless of how talented and hardworking he is).

I doubt they'll do much about that considering that Empires of EVE is out. That book basically does the job of detailing at least the first couple of years of major EVE player history, so there's probably not much sense of CCP doing something of their own.

I think that on the new site, if ever gona happen (wink wink eve shop experience) BlinkBlinkCry , there will be only some basic stuff and not comparable to what has been earlier, but we will get a commercial for EVE SOURCE for sure, somehow.

Yep. :( I'm expecting that too. There's lore in EVE Source that isn't available anywhere else, including very basic and very important lore such as the full requirements of becoming a capsuleer. How salty am I about that? Dead Sea salty. I stayed away from EVE for four years because of Monoclegate...

This has been an ongoing issue for years. Ever since the closure of the Magazine, fortnightly chronicles and other fiction.

It seems these days that a very small minority of the team are interested in keeping the lore alive. The rest just care solely about gameplay at the expense of immersion and world building. :/

I agree! Recently I was really stumped when someone in a public chat channel dropped the word "Yulai" and another one who is playing since 7 years (and is very active, quite helpful to new players, creates videos about EVE content, etc.) was asking: "What is Yulai?" The backstory and lore of EVE is far too hidden and too difficult to get into.

The minimum is a better organisation and completeness on the EVE website. The listing of the chronicles for example is awful, you just don't know where to start, what a chronicle is roughly about (there needs to be a mini "abstract" on each chronicle or some tags to have at least a little orientation), you don't know how the list is sorted, etc. To me the game is losing a lot if the history and background isn't actively maintained and driven forward.

I doubt it's the devs, almost all of them that I've spoken to can actually act very well in-character and know plenty of at least basic lore.

More likely it's the higher-ups who allocate resources that don't give a **** about the story or it's accessibility - we get news items, chronicles and the like by the truckload if it has something to do with something big what's happening in-game right now, otherwise it seems to be dead silent.

Like chronicles, we got those monthly, now we're lucky if we see one or two a year (at least that's what it feels like), depending on what's the big release coming up. Now with no place to host them let's see if we get them at all anymore. In-Character news items have always been more irregular but I distinctly recall seeing them a lot more often before 2010. Intersterllar correspondence doesn't show up on the launcher, at least I've never managed to catch one and the archive at least shows that there has been very few of these in general in the last two years... Whereas as before the 2010's I recall seeing them constantly, back when we had news highlights on the logon screen.

In general the story of EVE seems almost practically dead, briefly resurrected when it fits some arbitrary in-game event, at least compared to what it was before this is how it feels like to me.. Whoever is responsible for that, **** them hard.

I certainly hope they give the lore the ease of access and support it deserves. It is one of the main reasons why I got into EVE, and I'm very sad to see it slowly fading into the background.

CCP staff have plenty of interest in this, and always has.

CCP Inc. does not, and never has.

A very large part of the contributions to lore over the years by devs who love the stuff have been made in spite of, not the support of, CCP at large. Strangely, they don't stick around that long.

As someone who is rather new to EVE and who has fallen in love with the history of New Eden from day one, i have found it increasingly difficult to find lore explanations for many things, or just find more informations on New Edens history.

And i dont even want to start talking about forum threads linking to the dead Evelopedia and the fact that there is to my knowledge, no complete mirror of it.

Would be nice if CCP as a company would give EVEs lore some more love.

Well the DUST chronicles have been committed to the void. And all the original EVE Magazine Chronicles and artwork (which is absolutely fantastic) exists now on shelves of those who originally bought it. :/
