EDIT: Regarding corps: EVE is a real-time strategy (RTS) game that's played from the point of view of a single unit. You are a unit, and the point of the game is for these large alliances with thousands of "units" like you to conquer the map. So, activities like PVE, industry, trading, getting rich, and even some of the PVP, they're ok to do solo, and it's ok to learn the details of the game while playing solo, but once you've figured out how the pawns, bishops, knights, and rooks work individually, you may want to play the actual game of chess, rather than "hero's journey" with a single piece. When that time comes, join a corp, so you can participate in the RTS gameplay.

Wow, how NOT to sell it.

I have found Placid to be the "best" region in terms of balance.

+ It has some high-sec systems for you to mission or mine in.
+ If you want seclusion, there's also a high-sec island that rarely gets disturbed (Unour constellation).
+ Low sec is only a few jumps away if you prefer low sec, with plenty of 0.1 and 0.2 systems for ratting
+ FW is also next door for some PVP action and LP farming
+ You have easy access to three null-sec regions (Syndicate, Cloud Ring and Pure Blind)
+ It has TWO market hubs (Stacmon and Orvolle) so you're never too far away from resupplying

Thank you for your advice. As for considering myself as being more of a nomad, I suspected as much that I would most likely be moving around pretty often early on, especially while missioning. However would this make planetary interaction difficult? Would it be wise to set up a colony on planets that I may not be particularly near very often or is PI something a new player should hold off on? I must admit the idea of beginning PI early seemed like an interesting way of generating ISK rather passively while I tried other things.

You can make decent ISK doing PI if you get out of HS. That being said, it is mind numbingly boring. It feels like you're working a job, not playing a game.

Even living in WHs with access to the best PI in the game, I don't bother with it anymore simply because of how boring it is to do. But again, that's not to say you can't make decent money. I'd try it and see if you like it, then judge for yourself.

I'm going to run counter to the general vibe here.

I am in HiSec and do PI and quite a bit of solo work, even though I'm in a corp and fly with others.

Ignore any 'EVE is' kind of comments because even though this is something of an 'EVE is' comment itself, the game is really what you make of it.

You can play it solo and if it's fun for you that way, go for it. You can play it with friends and do the buddy thing, that's all fine as well. You can even jump into the mega corps/alliances and totally get sucked into the larger schemes and mechanics that sometimes completely rewrite New Eden. All of these are valid and can be mixed and matched depending on your skills and motivations to engage. It's called a sandbox for a reason, the game is just the borders of the box and the sand with some toys thrown in it for you to play with. How you do that is up to you.

My only advice is, never get 'bored'. There are a million things to do in the game and just when you think you've done them all, you find something else to tweak your fancy.

PI is just fine in HiSec to learn PI. I've done that and now it's just a minor stream of income that makes the company some pocket change that doesn't cost much once set up. It gives you something to do and if you want you can set it up for far longer turn around times so it doesn't feel like 'work'. When you're ready to go to Null or WH space, your skills are there to do it for bigger profit.

Don't see HiSec as a final place to play in the game, it's more of a starting ground, and somewhat stable area to do consistent activity in. If you are something of a White Knight sort, Providence is probably more your area. If you are more of a Pirate/Aggressor, just about anywhere in LoSec systems is your cup of tea. Or join in with the big corps/alliances in Null/WH space.

EVE is your game, you'll have to find your own way to play but definitely watch others and what they do, they can help you avoid some mistakes that can take the wind out of your sails.
