I find myself in a rather odd mood right now thanks to Ikons - Slow Light.

Had it on a USB stick what feels like a lifetime ago and listened to it while driving alone through a mostly industrial area of a city in the middle of the night, and that was a beautiful combo. Music has a way to take you places, and then take you back to them when you hear it again years later. Nostalgia ftw. Big smile

Elisabeth Fraser -absolutely one of the very best female vocalists of the 20th Century. Shirley Manson adores her as does Madonna, Prince and may others. Some journo hack once labelled her 'The Voice of God' much to her embarassment and ire, being the shy private type that she is.

Says 'This Mortal Coil' here, but it's Guthrie and Fraser a.k.a. The Cocteau Twins. This Mortal Coil was a somewhat impressive collective effort under the aegis of Ivo Watts-Russell's 4AD label.

The Jesus And Mary Chain, that's a band I hadn't heard mentioned in a quite a while, despite the buzz they generated back in the day, ever since they showed up with Psychocandy. I got to watch them live once (well, twice, but the second time was in some festival, so not the same), and it was quite a memorable experience.

On a related note, Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine, from "Loveless", another classic album, Shoegazing at its finest narcoleptic and noisy glory.

Not twelve minutes short, but short enough that when they left the stage, and the venue tried to close the curtains to let everyone know the show was over and would you kindly **** off back home, the audience - hungry for more, whistling and chanting for the band to come back - started pulling on the curtains. And pulled, and pulled until they ripped them completely off. Curtains or no curtains, the JAMC didn't play any more songs.

A pretty tame concert then, given their reputation.

Anyway, speaking of concerts, going to go watch Kylesa on Tuesday, looking forward to that, their last album is a very fine piece of sludgy psychedelic metal. Looking forward as well to how having two simultaneous drummers plays out on stage. And then, Mastodon a few days later - I'm not really liking their new album, but Leviathan and Blood Mountain are monumental modern classics nonetheless.
