Drone Range Problem

Hello Big smile

My wardens II, for example, whilst in the drone bay, have an optimal range of 118 kms. When launched, the optimal range falls to 60 kms. This happens no matter where I launch the drones, in a mission, or not in a mission.

I don't remember this happening in the past, but it is certainly happening consistently now. A few days ago I was targeting Sleepers, and there was no problem with the range. I just happened to notice it in a mission against the Serpentis. I closed the mission, sailed out to a safe spot, checked that the drones in the bay had a range of 118 kms, and relaunched the drones: just 60 kms range! This has been occurring for about three days now, everywhere.

If anyone can explain this, I would be most appreciative. Thank you. Big smile

Just sounds like they dont show thier buffed stats when they are launched and you press info, have you tried hitting stuff at long range with them to see if its actually a problem?

Fit drone link augmenters.

Yes, but that did not work.

"fit drone link augmenters"

Well, I'll fit a couple more and see what happens.

Thank you both! Big smile

Your Wardens still have an optimal of 118kms when deployed in space, even if the stats don't show that.

This is true but doesn't tell the whole story. You already have the right answer (fit DLAs) but here's why.

Drones have three range stats. Two of them are used with all turret-based weapons: optimal and falloff. They work exactly the same the as they do with guns (full hits within optimal, declining quality and chance to hit in falloff).

The third range stat is drone control range. This dictates the range (measured from your ship, not the drone itself) where you can tell a drone to interact with a target. The most range you can get based on just skills (and not flying an Ishtar or Imicus) is 60km (20km base, 5*5km from Scout Drone Operation and 5*3km from EWAR Drone Interfacing). So if you're hugging your sentry drones, you can only tell them to engage a target up to 60km from your ship.

There are two ways to extend this range. First, you can drop your drones and fly towards your target. Once your ship is within 60km from the target, you can tell the drones (which are stationary somewhere behind you) to engage. The other way is to fit Drone Link Augmentors for an extra 20km (tech 1), 25km (tech 2), or 26km (Black Eagle). You could do the same with rigs (Drone Control Range Augmentor), but this would be silly as you really want to be using Sentry Drone Augmentors instead.
