hey there. if im in the wrong forum subsection just let me know.

i had a suggestion for a new type of ship - did you guys ever think about a dedicated mining ship?

to make that kind of ship effective however, it would need to have a role bonus of sorts - more mining drones in space at the same time seems logical. if the numbers add up it wouldnt even need the ability to fit strip miners.

just wanted to hear your thoughts on this and maybe poke at the devs to think about this. :-)

im talking about a dedicate drone miner - not a regular barge or a raped myrmidon. and as far as i know theres nothing of the sort in eve right now

you can use a vexor which has mining bonuses to mining drones.

Well it's not like we don't already have 15 fu-... oh... drone mining ship. Gimme a sec.

I could see a drone mining ship with a cloak.
That way, when the miner panicks and cloaks up, the drones (probably those ridiculously expensive ones, you know how min/max'rs do) just float there like abandoned puppies waiting to be adopted!
Or the miner doesn't cloak immediately and tries to recall his drones. Oh the clock is ticking! Will he be able to cloak in time? Oh why did CCP give this ship a role bonus to half the drones' speed?

Side question: are the new mining drones actually drones or fighters?

No point in doing this, making a ship that mines via drones doesn't add anything interesting over existing mining ships, and drones put more strain on the server than strip miners.

If the design of asteroid belts changed from just a half circle, I could see some utility in a mining drone barge. It would be better for more spread out fields with smaller asteroids, while normal ones could be optimized for single, large rocks. However, in the current state of the game, there is very little reason for a drone mining barge.

James, like the ore anomalies in w-space?

That would be nice. Even nicer would be if asteroid belts would be full circles like the Kuiper belt or the rings of Saturn.

Generally speaking mining lasers are still more efficient, and mining drones are *horribly slow*, so I can't think of a situation where you wouldn't be better off using mining lasers, unless the drones actually mined more in which case you would just have people hug the rock to remove the travel time and use whatever mines the most, par usual, even in more spread out belts.

I have always wanted one. And it adds flavor, like how combat ships can choose between missiles and turrets even though both do the same job.

Most of the other shortcomings of mining drones can be handled with ship bonuses; speed, yield, quantity.

I personally would like a set that use the new squadron mechanic so I can have the animation of 15 drones with the server load of 3.
