I see today's dev post about ending the IGB by October 2016. Will tripwire be able to be used without being logged into the IGB?

Thanks.

This has been a major concern for me as well...

Why:
Money, yes the age old argument. I work freelance on the side now to earn enough money to provide for my family which has been my priority lately (also why I have been very MIA this year). This freelance work is taking the time I used to dedicate to working on Tripwire, and I need this income now more than even since I am getting married July 23rd and my wife will be going back to college this fall if we can make enough money that is.

Lately I have had to ask for donations to even just keep the Tripwire servers running (~$60/month).

I DO have some progress adapting Tripwire to use CREST but it is far from complete but it IS AVAILABLE to the public via an open source branch on BitBucket. This still requires at least 100 hours of work so I just don't see any way for me to complete this by October.

Some have suggested I raise funds to compensate me the time ($20-30 per hour). I have tried this before by selling t-shirts which only ended up raising about $200 after costs and not counting the hours spent packing and shipping and running everything. So if this is something the community wants it will need to be a drive someone else runs.

As it stands atm I am planning to shut Tripwire servers down this fall and discontinue the project :(

Thanks for everyone's support

Tripwire is a great tool and as a member of Signal Cartel for me it's basically the single most important third party app I am using.

Therefore I'd like to offer you free hosting on my server. I am an IT professional, but I run this particular server as a private project. So I can't guarantee a 99,9% availability or take any responsibility for unforeseen downtimes. But nevertheless over the last years there was only a single downtime of a few days which was caused by a hardware failure. Other than that there is an occasional short reboot to update the kernel every now and then, but that's a matter of seconds.

It's not perfect, but it's free. :)

Just let me know, if you are interested.

As a third party dev myself, I know this frustration all too well. This stuff takes a lot of work and you get almost nothing in return when asking for donations. That's just how people roll these days. Because we can't make money from our apps, we are left with doing this mostly free.

One option someone suggested to me was https://www.patreon.com You can set up a project and people can elect to provide monthly support. Maybe this is something to look into.

Good luck o7

I really like the idea of the Patreon. Sadly the License agreement fro CREST clearly states you are not allowed to change money for any application. Nor are you allowed to distinguish between donors and non-donors in how you deliver your content (eg. removal of Ads).
There might be some grey areas that might be possible if they are outside of the App (e.g. have a 10$ per month level to be able to vote on new features). Since it has only to do with the development process and not the App itself it might not be covered by the CREST agreement)

Set up a Patreon and have like levels of 1$,2$,5$,10$,20$,50$ per month. Someone from an Alliance might say he wants to donate in the name of all of his members. And have a thank you page with the last month donors with their Eve-Name and Corp/Alliance so its visible who keeps the site running.

I really hope this will work out.

The rules, as I understand them (and had clarification from other sources) is that you can use Patreon but you cannot restrict access to only supporters. ie: Tripwire remains free. People can support him via Patreon. There cannot, however, be subscriber only features OR access restricted to only subscribers.

Man I would totally be up for throwing some cash your way with a Patreon. Do you accept ISK donations to help plex your accounts?

Holy cow! I never expected to receive this much support <3

tldr; I am NOT going to shut down Tripwire servers.

I have received enough donations in 48 hours to run the servers for nearly 8 months. This is thanks to only a handful of individuals who donated $100 each and Wingspan who blew me away with $250. But don't think your $5 donations are not enough, every single tiny bit helps directly keep the servers paid for!

For those interested the servers are run via Digital Ocean using 4 $5 clustered servers with a $20 database server. Additionally I am required to pay for CloudFlare CDN which is an additional $20 (free version doesn't work with IGB because of SSL support). So once IGB support is removed the server costs will go down to just $40 a month.

I appreciate the offers to host Tripwire, but for security sake I like to keep that under only my control. Anyone is more than welcome to fire up another public version of Tripwire, there are several private copies out there now.

I will address CREST support and future dev efforts this weekend after I look into some funding sites to use.

Thank you all again for your support! It really feels nice to be appreciated :D

I do use ISK donations to help promote Tripwire by giving away prizes and such (see my twitter page). CCP has granted me fansite status which does give me 1 free EVE account.

That would be correct. You cannot charge for access to your application or restrict special features behind paid access (talking real money not in-game here). You can however accept donations.

Like many of you have noticed, the best way to donate is via tripwire.eve-apps.com/donate for now, until he gets one of the other recommended platforms (gofundme/Patreon) going.

As many have suggested already I have created a Patreon account for taking donations for the servers and for development goals like adding CREST support in preparation of the IGB removal.

Daimian - If you wanted to, within 30 minutes you could also set up a Redbubble store - They do custom shirts/merch with your designs, they handle manufacturing/shipping/billing, and you can set a profit %age on top of their base price, so people can buy TW swag and then you generate a % on top to help with costs/development without having to do any actual work handling the nitty gritty portion of the merch side of things.

Just a thought.

Is there any (known) way a previous corp member could access his old corps tripwire? Some strange behaviour prompts the question : chains vanishing while 2 of our us tz guys were online and when i look at the chains today they don't look the same as when I logged last night.

I'm aware that this could be a corp security issue and nothing to do with tripwire.
