SSL error with new launcher

Per CCP Explorer's request in this post ( https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=6523814#post6523814 ), I'm placing my trouble ticket issue here.

Hi CCP, I'm still having an issue with the new launcher. Today, to get into Eve, I launched exefile.exe manually. Fortunately, my client is up to date with patches.

I've previously submitted a trouble ticket - 133073 - that I opened in February. I have:

  • reinstalled Eve numerous times
  • reinstalled my operating system - trying Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 (I'm currently on Win10, not XP or Vista or whatever)
  • purchased a new router
  • purchased multiple new ethernet cards - both wifi and wired
  • purchased a new motherboard
  • tried both the standard and dev versions of the new launcher

All this for Eve. Every other multiplayer game I have works without issue. Every other application which requires a network connection also works.

A look into the network packets shows that the launcher and server successfully complete an SSL handshake, but (for whatever reason) either the client or server forcibly and prematurely closes the SSL connection. In the log file, I see where the launcher is attempting to download SSL patch files, and I can copy/paste those SSL files into my web browser and successfully download each update component bit - every time. That suggests to me that it's in the launcher code, not in my system somewhere ... but yet I still purchased new hardware just in case.

Then, without warning or resolution, ticket 133073 was closed. I've now opened a new ticket, but so far there's been no suggestion or progress on my new ticket. That ticket is 205471. I've submitted in both old and new tickets several launcher logs and screenshots of the new launcher as I invoked it within a few seconds of each other. Each time, I'd get a different kind of SSL error.

I've demonstrated how willing I am to get Eve to work again, but of course I can only operate as quickly as support has suggestions. Support appears to be overwhelmed now (each time they respond, it's several days later and with an apology for the delay), and support also appears to be out of suggestions.

If this forum has suggestions, I'm all ears.

I have an update! It turns out my new support ticket - 205471 - has now also been closed without a response from support. It frustrates me that my support tickets are closed without effort on support's part. What's the point of support if it doesn't respond?

I'm very hesitant to spend additional real world money if I don't know I can access the game after June 30th.

This is likely a long shot, but do you have some sort of anti-virus / internet security / program installed? (or a Lenovo or other laptop with preinstalled crapware). Some of those are particularly obnoxious - they strip off SSL to snoop the traffic then re-encrypt it with their own fake certificate. They patch your OS and browsers to trust this fake certificate. The catch is that the eve launcher might not see this and instead sees it for what it is - a straight up man-in-the-middle attack - and treat it just like if the bad guys were trying to steal your passwords etc.

If that's the case there is something you can try. Try the "E" menu in the top right of the launcher, E->Settings. NOT the gearwheel settings button on the left. The choices are: Language, Version type, ... "Ignore certification errors". Try checking the last box (ignore certification errors ->yes) and re-test. If something is interfering with SSL, that may be enough to have the launcher ignore the SSL certificate errors.

Of course, it prevents detection of actual bad guys, so don't do this lightly. I know this is a long shot, but if you're out of options it won't take long to try.

Thanks for your suggestion!

This is a custom built desktop, not an off-the-shelf laptop. I used one custom firewall - Tinywall - but I never reinstalled it when I reinstalled my operating system the first time. I've even disabled the Windows firewall without success.

As for other options, I've tried using "ignore certification errors" also without success. I've also tried DX9 instead of 11 - not that I have any reason to believe DX9 might fix the issue, but when you're out of sane options, you try even the insane ones.

I'm happy to try other ideas/suggestions if anyone has them!

I've previously tried a couple different routers, but last night I got the idea to try with NO router at all at home. Yes, I have multiple networked devices at home. No, I can't use any of them when I connect my PC directly to the internet. However, for the glory of Eve, I gave it a try.

Even with no router at all, I still have the same SSL connection issue.
