Hi - new Citizen reporting in.

Wondered for years "if EVE could be fun". Tried it out couple of days ago and yes - for me it is. Enjoying it. It fills the gap former space-browsergames (of around 2003) left open and yet unfilled.

But coming to my question - regarding the little push you get as a new citizen: is it possible to not get the free 400k skillpoints? Tabula rasa.

I get the idea behind it (removing entry barriers for new players), but it feels off for me at least. I always liked the feeling of "just waiting for another few minutes until X is finished to start Y". Learning one of the first skills with around 4D of time to wait makes it a bit less immersive or, let's say, in a way disconnected and heteronomous in the early beginnings of a new character. Even though it all might be just basic-skills to get the game running.

If my perception is to be corrected due to things I may not know yet, feel free to do so.

Thanks, Shewlu

Nope, cannot remove them.

I very much doubt you would enjoy not having those, they are by public consensus pretty much "need to haves"

We had a discussion about this a while back with the devs and they are as much for our benifit as they are yours,
A lot of those skills are the kind of things we want newbros to have if we are looking to tutor/recruit/kidnap them.

Warp disruption and thermodynamics being two exelent examples, you mighnt have thought to train those untill told to but those are vital for pvp and were always a pain in the arse to get people to train as it takes time out of the fun stuff like guns and ships and things.

Essentialy they make you usefull "right out of the box" so to speak, which is a good thing, great thing even.

If you want an in charachter way to reconcile with them think of them as tje reason you were eligible to become a capsulier in the first place.

And to be fair Im playing nearly 4 years and my skill que is still going, i still have plenty of **** to train .

Regardless , welcome aboard mate.

Thanks for the insights. Seems like I have no choice anyhow. :)

And therefor as well. That's a nice way to put it!

I feel welcomed. The warmth of nostalgia embraces me.

I've always looked at those as the equivalent of:

- Passive skill: you can wear light armor
- Passive skill: you can wear medium armor
- Passive skill: you can wield 1-handed weapons.
- Passive skill: you can ride horses.

from other MMO's; skills given at level 1 that make the game work.

Hello and welcome to Eve.

It's been quite a while now since I've even looked at a brand new character so I don't even know what skills or level they start with.

However I'm sure they don't give all of the Core Fitting Skills and the ones they do give are probably just trained to level 2 max.

My advice is to train them all up asap. They will enhance your ship stats and make it easy for you to do good ship fits.

Hope you have a long and rewarding career here in Eve.

I just started a new alt and they give you basically many of the skills you needed to train right off the bat. hull upgrades 2 mechanic 3 repair systems 1, drone avoinics and drone 1, cap management and cap systems op both at 3, Pg and cpu management both at 4, thermo 1, weapon upgrades 2, gunnery 4, several gun skills at 2, afterburner and navigation at 3, a few other navigation skills at 1. cybernetics 1, mining and salvaging 3, enough exploration skills to start running sites right out of the box. several shield skills at 2 or 3, the ability to fly your racial frigate and a venture out of the box, some targeting skills at 1 or 2.

Its quite impressive. I think i started out with around 420k SP

Ahhh, thanks for the info.

Probably a few skills left out but overall it seems like a good start.

It is a good start. I was able to put my alt in a kestrel without any fitting problems and i filled every slot. I was also able to upgrade to a caracal with heavies with less than a day of training.

I think the biggest problem for new players is going to be isk. While saving that isk on skillbooks is helpful, skills are not useful if you cant afford to fly anything. And we all know that the likely hood of a newbie dying to rats or another player in his first week is quite high.

My first day i had someone try to bait me in an anom by stealing from me then locking me. Which reminds me, they also turned auto locking off. Last alt i made a few years back you had to manually turn off auto locking people/rats that locked you. Im sure thats saved a lot of newbies thinking if the game is locking the ship for me then its ok to shoot it.

Over all, the game is easier to start for a new player than it was a few years ago.

This may come as a shock to you, and maybe some veteran players, but my take is that the 400K SP's you start with aren't all that important in the larger scheme of things.

Like Ralph and other's have said, yes, those are the basic 'you gotta have' day 1 to be able to do much of anything. However as you go and start to broaden or specialize your training, in 2 months those skills are still foundational but not as valuable as whatever it is you are currently doing.

When you get fairly long in the tooth you can start using skill extractors to shuffle your points around if you really want to tailor your experience but not all skills can be extracted and there is a floor as well.

So, I wouldn't worry too much about those starting points. Your focus will be elsewhere soon enough. You can also do Dailies and if you're diligent it can take as little as 40 days of them to match the starting points you are given. If you can't wait, there is always skill injectors.

SP's aren't as much of a sticking point as they used to be in the past.
