If he were a True Slave he would be spouting Nation-friendly propaganda.

He isn't though. He is an exiled True Amarr who with some serious guilty conscience issues (especially towards the Minmatar and slavery in particular). Serious enough that he had spout up some fancy narrative only a third rate semi-literate pulp author could come up with.

A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.
