EVE-O Preview v3.0.0 (multi-client preview / switcher)

The purpose of this tool is to provide a simple way to keep an eye on several simultaneously running EVE Online clients and to easily switch between them. While running it shows a set of live thumbnails for each of the active EVE Online clients. These thumbnails allow fast switch to the corresponding EVE Online client either using mouse or a configurable hotkey.

It's essentially a task switcher, it does not relay any keyboard/mouse events and suchlike. The program works with EVE, EVE through Steam, or any combination thereof.

The program does NOT (and will NOT ever) do the following things:

  • modify EVE Online interface
  • display modified EVE Online interface
  • broadcast any keyboard or mouse events
  • anyhow interact with EVE Online except of bringing its main window to foreground or resizing it

System Requirements

  • Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10
  • Windows Aero Enabled
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5+ (it is already included in Windows 8+. For older systems the installer can be downloaded here)

How To Install & Use

Download page
Direct download (version 3.0.0)

Code Repository

  1. Download and extract the contents of the .zip archive to a location of your choice (ie: Desktop, CCP folder, etc). Please do not install the program into the Program Files or Program files (x86) folders. These folders in general do not allow applications to write anything there while EVE-O Preview now stores its configuration file next to its executable, thus requiring the write access to the folder it is installed into.
  2. Start up both EVE-O Preview and your EVE Clients (the order does not matter)
  3. Adjust settings as you see fit. Program options are described here or in the readme.pdf file

***

This program is legal under the EULA/ToS:

Please keep the discussion on topic. The legitimacy of this software has already been discussed and doesn't need to be again. Assuming the functionality of the software doesn't change, it is allowed in its current state.

Overlays which contain a full, unchanged, EVE Client instance in a view only mode, no matter how large or small they are scaled, like it is done by EVE-O Preview as of today, are fine with us. These overlays do not allow any direct interaction with the EVE Client and you have to bring the respective EVE Client to the front/put the window focus on it, in order to interact with it.

When you encounter a bug or a crash please do the following, as this will greatly help me to pin down and fix the possible bug:

Next to the .exe file there is a configuration .JSON file. Please send it to me via EVE in-game mail. To protect your privacy please replace the name(s) of your alt(s) in the message with something like 'EVE - Alt 1' , 'EVE - Alt 2', etc before actually sending it out to me.

StinkRay, the original creator of EVE-O Preview, plays EVE in phases. Makari Aeron, the previous lead developer of the project, did temporarily leave EVE. So I'll be taking over the forum thread. The original threads can be found here and here.

Verson 2.0.0 is available

What's new:

  • The program code has been completely revamped to streamline further development
  • Configuration storage format has been changed to JSON from XML

Be aware: this version uses completely new settings storage. So your current settings will be ignored and you'll need to setup the things anew. Sorry about that.

The complete list of changes can be found here

The only problem atm that I have with this program is that the overlay itself uses a lot of CPU.

This one or the previous one? 2.0 shoul use CPU more sparingly. Also now there is an option that allows to adjust the thumbnail list refresh rate (the most CPU-eating action actually): ThumbnailRefreshPeriod entry in the config file. By default it is set to 500 which means that processes list is scanned each 500 milliseconds (or 0.5 second).

Right now I am running 2 clients and EVE-O with CPU consumption 12% and 4% for EVE clients and 0% for EVE-O

Dunno know about windows ui stuff, but could we remove the preview windows from windows 10 task switcher (alt+tab). Though, I haven't yet tested this version. Gonna do that in 10h or so.

edit: seems this is working in 2.0.1 :)

The new version seems buggy for me:

1. Every time I close and restart the application, it changes the thumbmail size.
Example: I set it to 320x210 which is the size I want. Then I close and restart the client and it changes the setting to 304x171. I close it and when I start it again, it sets itself to 288x132.

2. I can't enter numbers into the size fields. I have to use up and down arrows to increase and decrease by 10.

1. That's interesting. Could you drop me a mail with your config file? It is the EVE-O Preview.json file next to the .exe. It is just a plain text file and should pass vie eve mail. Before sending it please edit out your alt's names from the config file Blink
That would greatly help me to pin it down and fix.

2. Will look at it (probably tomorrow). I would say that you can edit the config file directly to set the size you want, but given (1) it won't help anyway.

I have a major issue with the tool and im not sure where the problem lies. Very often whenever I start a new client or the tool (while 2 clients are running), the client im starting or sometimes even both clients would freeze, kind of. I cannot switch back to the client in question at all. The thumbnail is frozen, completely white or showing only a portion of the screen, while the rest is white. The whole window (I play in fixed window) doesnt appear at all, but seems to accept commands.

I didnt find a similar issue on Github and im not sure what might be causing it. Any ideas? This puts my ships in great risk as I have to close the client, sometimes in combat. Effectively makes the use of the tool impossible for me :(

Regards!

Hello

Do you use 2.0.0 or one of earlier versions? If you use 2.0 then could you do the following when this happens:
Next to the .exe file there is a configuration .JSON file. Please send it to me vie eve-mail. To protect your privacy please vefore sending replace the name(s) of your alt(s) in the message with something like 'EVE - Alt 1' 'EVE - Alt 2' etc

Also please send me the Windows version you use

TIA

PS That said, there is a possible cause. When you minimize add EVE windows via hotkey and then jump to it via Alt-TAB its thumbnail sometimes becomes broken. Still atm I am not sure what could cause the rest, as EVE-O Preview doesn't interact with EVE clients at all (except for one thing written by CCP FoxFour)

Maximum size I can get for the previews are 640x400. Is this correct? Would be great if this can be adjusted higher so that I can fill my screen with 6 clients. At the moment there are lots of open spaces , or am I doing something wrong. Thanks.

Hello

This will work in the next version to be released today.

It can be adjusted as you see fit. Close the program and open its configuration file EVE-O Preview.json with any text editor. There are lines like

> "ThumbnailMaximumSize": "640, 400",
> "ThumbnailMinimumSize": "100, 80",

Set the max size to, say, "1280, 960" and start the EVE-O Preview. Then resize the previews as you like

Verson 2.0.1 is available

What's new and fixed:

  • Borderless thumbnails had incorrect size settings
  • It was not possible to set Max and Min thumbnail sizes via config file
  • It was not possible to enter thumbnail width or height in the corresponding edit boxes
