You want salt? We got salt.

http://utah.com/bonneville-salt-flats

Utah produces some of the naturally saltiest capsuleers New Eden has ever seen. And we'll be celebrating that by descending upon the famed Bonneville Salt Flats for a day to catch up with old faces, and hopefully meet some new ones.

DETAILS:
Date: June 11th, 2016
Time: Kickoff at 2pm. I'm not setting a hard quitting time, but feel free to bounce when you need to.

Since we're meeting at such a unique location, you'll have to bring your own food and drinks. Just please be mindful to pick up after yourself. I'll bring trash bags. And keep in mind that we are meeting in a desert of salt in the middle of summer, so dress appropriately and bring water.

I'd recommend giving the Travel Advisory a read.

RULES:
Since we're meeting at a national landmark, we need to keep a few things in mind.

  • No camping on the salt flats
  • Seriously, no camping on the salt flats (The Land Management Bureau takes this pretty seriously. If you want to do some camping after the meetup, there is a KOA campground in Wendover just 15 minutes from the Salt Flats)
  • No campfires
  • Minimize waste

DIRECTIONS:
This is assuming you're coming from Salt Lake proper, but it's pretty easy.

  • Get on I-80 and head west
  • Drive for about an hour or so
  • Take the exit at Salt Flats Rest Area Westbound

Updated with more details in the second post.

I thought I would go through the proper channels and get a permit for an organized group event. But as it turns out, the Salt Lake Bureau of Land Management wants $120 for the permit itself, and an additional $25 per person attending. Sooooo we're going to take our changes and skip the permit. The salt flats are publicly accessible year-round anyway, and I don't think a handful of EVE nerds are going to ruffle any legal feathers. Just read over the details above for some things to keep in mind.

I am hoping to make it, depending on my work situation. Working on call 24/7 makes it... difficult... to plan anything. I missed last years Red Rock meeting by a couple hours.

Wouldn't this be better somewhere where we can actually enjoy a drink like, Park City or something? Just saying cause there is literally nothing around there. Regardless I will be at the saltiest eve meet in the world Big smile.

To be honest, I was a bit curious as for what to expect. I have lived here for some years now, but have not been out to that area yet. Are we to be bringing food/drinks I suppose? I am guessing this is an alcohol free event given the location? Any more details or recommendations would be much appreciated.

I understand that the location is pretty unusual for a casual meet. My hope is that people would be willing to make the drive for the sake of a unique location that ties into a running theme with EVE. I've talked to a few people about this and opinions are pretty evenly split on the location. Some love the idea, others want something a bit more convenient. So I say we give it a shot, and if it's too much of a hassle for people then that's a lesson learned for the next meet.

I'll be bringing drinks (bottled water and others) and snacks in a small cooler to share. As far as alcohol is concerned, the regular state rules apply:

* No possession or consumption while under the age of 21
* No consumption while operating a motor vehicle
* No open containers allowed in vehicles

Needless to say, if you choose to drink, please do so responsibly. Remember that we will be meeting in a salt desert in the middle of summer. We'll be meeting at a rest stop which will have a restroom, but other than that there will be no facilities for a few miles in any direction. I encourage everyone to bring water for themselves and extra. A 12-pack of bottled water is like, $3 at any grocery store.

As long as we are mindful of the location and clean up after ourselves, we should be in the clear. Keep in mind that the salt flats is a national landmark. Best practice is to leave it in better condition than when you found it. I'll be bringing trash bags to help keep things clean.

If anyone has any other questions or concerns, feel free to hit me up here, on twitter @manicvelocity, or in game.

I really appreciate everyone for making the drive, bringing snacks and drinks and being cool with the location. Sure enough after a week of great weather across the valley we get hit with rain on meetup day. :P

Next meet will definitely be somewhere in or around SLC proper. I'm already thinking about locations, and I'd like to host more of these throughout the year. Maybe once a quarter?
