Recruit a Friend already trial account

Im confused, so it says on the eve page that you can recuit someone who is already doing their trial account period. (i started the game because of a friend and we forgot to use the recruit a friend thing and i dont want to have to start over. But since i havent subbed the account yet we were trying to do the recruit a friend thing first). However he sent the email (to the same one that my account was created with) and i got it. It prompts me only to make a new account, did i misunderstand and this cant be done?

He sends email.
You click the link to create new account.
When you upgrade the new account from trial to paid, he gets the reward.

Does not work on existing trial accounts. You have to create NEW account from the link.
