Next logical step would be a Gila, these days it ends up costing about the same as a battleship and it can handle level 4s and many other kinds of pve easily

I don't know if anyone is still reading this ... but I just want to repeat my thanks for all the great replies, and give some feedback.

The Worm works quite well at L2 (missions), its drones destroy NPCs really quickly, but its tank starts to fail if there are too many opponents, so that has to be watched (as you said Shah). I haven't had to retreat and repair yet, but it's been close.

Drones ... all advice noted. My drone losses are now reduced by docking drones when they start to take damage. I haven't tried the target painter yet.

I've started fitting a Myrmidon, as I found I already had most of the skills I needed. Then I hit the T2 fittings. :-( Lots more skills required! NP though, I'm still not at L3 missions.

I've looked at all the other ships that were suggested. I'll try some of them out later, as I enjoy fitting and flying different ships and don't worry too much if I don't end up using them a lot.

I'm going to have to figure out EFT!

Donnacadh, your urging caution is well received, and as you see above I'm preparing a Myrmidon for L3. On the other hand, this is what tends to happen. I make a "sensible" choice, research some fits and kick off the skill training. I then have maybe two weeks or more for the training to complete and I get bored. So I fill in the time with experimenting with ... well, whatever catches my eye. It doesn't bother me too much if a few disasters occur, so long as it's fun and I learn from it.

Again, thanks to everyone!

Don't forget to set hotkeys for drones. all attack, all orbit, and all return are good ones to set and I don't think any of them are set by default.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

There are defaults, sort of, thankfully

escape menu > shortcuts > drones

f = all drones attack current target
shift + r = return to drone bay
shift + alt + r = return and orbit.

two of those being set to just one hotkey might be handy if one used drones a lot, though...

Yes, I use these, plus I've set a hotkey for reconnect to drones. That's for when I forget to retrieve drones before warping away, something I did a lot at one time. :-( Incidentally, F also works to tell salvage drones to start salvaging.

I could also use some help with salvage drones. I carry two with the idea of getting wrecks salvaged quicker. The problem is that if I tell them both to salvage together, they both attach to one wreck, then both go on to next and so on. I'm not sure what the result is when two drones salvage the same wreck simultaneously, it seems to work, but I don't think there is any decrease in time taken to salvage. I've tried selecting wrecks separately and trying to get each drone to work on a separate wreck, but without much success. If anyone knows a procedure that works for this, I would be grateful to hear it.
