Allowed is what you can fit.

As above mentioned, but in general Industrials are compared to Cruiser (Medium mods) so likely you can fit the frig-size or cruiser-size on it (1MN / 10MN)

10MN is the "matched" size. They're cruisers, like mining barges and exhumers.

The only items that are directly tied to a ship size are rigs. The rest, if it will fit the available PG/CPU then it is allowed.

For rigs:
Small = Frigate
Medium = Cruiser
Large = Battleship

Guns will have a size indication (S/M/L) in their icon and fit the schema above. Afterburners/Microwarp drives/armour plates all state "Note: this is a {x} class module" in their description. You can reverse the above schema to get a Small/Medium/Large classification for them.

To determine what is "normal" for the ship you are looking at, do a show info on it and click the Fitting tab. Right at the bottom there is a "Rig Size" attribute which will tell you which of the above it is designated as.

(Note that this gets a little more complicated when you start looking at ships that require the skill "Capital Ships" to use, but works fine for normal sub-caps)

Also cap mods, since Dominion it is no longer possible to fit a single 6x2500mm gun on an abby anymore, regardless of how much PG it can get.
