My problem with the present system is that anyone can put a bounty on anyone for any reason or none. In RL bounties are offered by some kind of authority for some specific reason (like being a fugitive from the law). You can't just put a bounty on your neighbor because he had a loud party or because you don't like the look of him. That's something else entirely and would be a crime.

So, to be a "real" bounty system, lacking courts, laws, etc, there would need to be something to enforce placing bounties only for "good reasons", and good luck with defining that.

One thing that could be interesting is to put real teeth into the penalty, like "prison". Currently "death" is no more than an inconvenience at worst. I would suggest instituting a system where a "criminal" could be "captured " (details to be defined) and "locked up" by a short ban on logging in, or be confined to a prison station maybe.

Uh criminals absolutely put out bounties. What do you think a contract killer even does?

Indeed. It's just less "official" when the criminals do it. They don't post list like the FBI for example.

Bounty systems (a true bounty system) are incompatible with EVE Online.

The purpose of a bounty is to stop a behavior which can't be stopped in any other way. Yet in EVE Online, there are only a few things deemed unacceptable behavior and they are enforced via rules and GMs. The rest of possible behaviors it's just "playing the game". Thus, any "bounty system" actually working as a bounty system would just pee on someone's playstyle for no reason. Thus you can't turn bounty system into a "free-kill voucher" against non-PvP players nor a "omg what a terrible mistake I did" harsh penalty against PvPrs.

The current bounty system is stupid and mostly useless but it can't be gamed, and that's about the best you can do within EVE's spirit and guidelines. Whenever you ask to "improve" it some players will ask for a way to game it, or a way to circumvent crimewatch, or a way to discourage ganking. CCP would be foolish to listen to any of them.

PS: anyway I would get rid of the ability to bounty yourself. It's eye-soring stupid. What?

All you're doing is making someone take a moment to do it from an alt.

EDIT: I mean I agree, sure it's a bit pathetic, but whatever; it's their ISK and harms no-one, so why worry about it?

Bounties are plagued with a few seemingly unsolvable issues:

  • Alts/corpies will collect bounties.
  • Bounties will be used to flag people for pvp in highsec if it is at all possible.
  • Any limiting factor on who can be bountied will be unable to make exceptions for meta-acts like intentional bumping, scamming, spying, etc.

IWI demonstrated a properly working bounty system relatively recently.
Bounty hunting is likely to remain a metagame feature as any mechanic introduced by CCP to make it more effective can/would/should be exploited.

Not that I'm against that or anything Pirate.

Hey everyone,

well i am quite amazed by some thoughts that i have read about the bounty systems. I too agree that this mechanic is worthless and broken.

I believe that this system needs some crazy overhaul. Anyways onto my Idea.

I believe that the bounty should be broken up into two parts. One for Empire Space, and the other for Null Security space. In High-Sec and Low-Sec a bounty should accumulate on a individual for breaking the "law". Eg. Killing Gate, Ganking someone, anything that makes you go Suspect or criminal. Now for me to say what gets you assigned what amount of Isk i wouldn't know. but in order to get access to this bounty, you need the knowledge, so there should be a few skills for this, Maybe one for individuals and the higher the level will allow you to access High amount bounties. To select the bounty that you want to hunt you have to go to a CONCORD Office and pick one. then Concord will give you the "Bounty-Rights" then you go hunting. Now to cash in the bounty you need the corpse from the individual at a CONCORD office, unless someone can thing of a way we can get a bounty for alive pilots ( Dead or Alive concept)?

Now for Null-Sec, This is all Player-Driven so if someone wants some one dead They issue the Bounty contract to their Citadel or Outpost for what ever amount and information they can give about the target. Bounty hunter comes to the Citadel picks up the contract, and they go hunt them and bring back the corpse, or for some new system that allows a pilot to capture another, they can be put on the Citadel for what ever they need to answer for.

Now there was a comment about new players:

This system should't be able to touch them until they finish:

  • Trial and Subscribe
  • Finish the Aura Tutorial
  • Finish a Career agent

Anyways this is my Idea is there any thoughts or gaps please tell me :)

1. reselt all bounties to 0, after refunding if doable.

2. Create a new "total ISK earned during the pilot lifetime" data point (aka any ISK that entered his or her wallet, regardless of the source and regardless of where it went after that)

3. Allow players to only put bounties on people that have a higher "total ISK earned during the pilot lifetime" than they currently have.

4. replace the highest bounty e-penis list display by this new "total ISK earned during the pilot lifetime" data point for those that check the "show my ****" checkbox.

5. Allow any player with a bounty on them to pay the sum of the bounty + 10% to get rid of it at any bounty office (bribery/corruption/ISK sink)

6. Any player with a bounty on them would have to pay an extra tiny percentage of their total bounty value everytime they dock/undock/buy/sell/contract anywhere (greasing hands to remain undetected). There should be a checkbox with "always pay to grease hands" in the setting. They could choose not to do pay such extra fee, in which case their location would immediately be communicated to those with a contract on them with the date, current time stamp and nature of the transaction (see 7.)

7. Allow bounty contracts to be taken on pilots with a Bounty on their head for a fee that increases exponentially with the number of bounty contracts the same pilot has as well as the number of already active contracts on the target pilot.
The target would receive notification about each contract created against them, without knowing who took it.
The contract would allow the bounty hunter pilot (and no one else) to start one limited engagement with the target. If a player get rid of his bounty as per 5. or because other players have exhausted its bounty pool, all remaining contracts on that pilot are voided and their amount refunded wit a 10% loss.

Other current rules about claiming bounties remains unchanged, except that the bounty payout would only be taken if the pilot with the kill has an active bounty contract.

So from reading all of these. I think we all agree the current system does not pay enough. It's just not worth it so to be a current bounty hunter you have to do it through player driven agreements. We often get contracts like this. So I wonder if Ccp will revisit this career. O

So my low xp awoxing alt is completely immune to bounties even after it kills your Orca guy's Orca? Unless you trivially evade it by using a cyno alt or something?

What an absurd restriction.

I am not sure what the low xp has to do with anything I mentioned...
the main reason for 3. is to limit bounties as a griefing tool toward players that would not have the means to pay the extra 10% to get rid of it as per 5.
So if you are the top ISK earner in the game, then yes you are effectively barred from putting bounties on anyone. It is by intent.
