Anyone remember this old faction artwork? What happened?

So, i've just returned after a 3 year break from EVE. I've found many welcome changes which have re-sparked my interest in the game, just enough to start playing again.

However, it saddens me greatly to find the whole character customization thing is pretty much just as bare-bones as I left it.
Characters, both male and female are still stuck with a small selection of unimaginative, super-conservative and utterly boring clothing options - many of which can barely even be told apart. The hairstyles are the same, and the accessories too. I mean, male characters still have the same, singular long-hairstyle as when I left! And as far as I know, station-walking with other people is still non-existent.

So...what happened?

I came across this old faction/character artwork while randomly browsing:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/62/The_four_playable_EVE_races_as_seen_during_character_creation.png

(link was broken, fixed now x.x)

Where are THOSE outfits, and THOSE hairstyles? They look waaaay more interesting than what we have now.

I fully realise and agree that it's hardly the most important issue, but come on...where's the love? Surely CCP have enough time and money by now to put some effort into this particular subject, at least on the side?

......please? ._.

This link will actually work.

The new characters we got weren't really for us, EVE had become a test bed for World of Darkness to a point where they literally stop caring for the game. On top of that it's as with every "graphics update" we got: higher fidelity but ****** looks and aesthetics, probably due to a lack of caring and dev quality.

Just noticed the link and fixed it x.x Thanks though.

Can't say i've ever heard of 'World of Darkness', is it another game CCP were/are working on?

I really wish they'd at least add more hair styles to the cash shop. Come on, CCP, that's low-hanging fruit and it's win/win.

Also, its ultra conservative so they can keep the pegi rating low (despite eve is clearly an adult game) and there would be alot of half naked female characters around, which the icelandic people find sexist.

Yeah, as if even 10% of people aged like 15 or under have the attention span let alone maturity to play a game like EVE to begin with...-_-

They can't really pull the sexist excuse either, since they had this artwork in the game already anyway. There are half-naked sprites of 'Exotic Dancers' and such still in the game, too.

One thing that happened to the art direction in EVE was that, at some point betweent 2006 and 2009, this game stopped being a Space Punk MMO and became a Science Fiction MMO.

Characters in the original character creator were given an emphasis on their lack of humanity and otherworldliness, and a lot of tropes from the 90's plauged the game's backstory to make a point on how much grimdark New Eden is. Even ships had this rusthic feel to drive home the point that most of New Edens technology was salvaged from the precussor humanity that first colonized New Eden.

What we have today in terms of asthetics is but a pastiche of the orginal design EVE had. It has evolved, refined itself. Our characters look and feel human and there are few signs that reveal the kind of aberation a capsuleer is, despite every text and game content that survived from the original game (like missions) telling you otherwise.

I for one don't mind EVE as it now, as it is a lot more positive and optimistic than the 2003 version ever was.

Clothing and augmentations really need some high res textures. Surely it can't be that hard to update those assets, they look absolutely terrible.

There is an 11 y/o player currently giving one of the biggest highsec ganking organizations (CODE. - which they say "always wins") a hard time.

If you have a boring looking character then you only have yourself to blame. I get that not everybody can be quite as beautiful as i am, but still, it's a neat-o little character customisation tool that many made good use of.

If that were true it would be a first and it would say a lot about the other Anti-gankers who have all failed to do so.

There once was a ganker named tisi

A stunningly beautiful missy

To gank a gross miner

There is nothing finer, cept when they get all pissy

Hairstyles are the most work-intensive part of avatars. Probably CCP can release 50 clothing items for the time/effort required to make a single hairstyle... assuming there's still someone in the company who didn't need to learn how to make hairstyles to actually make them.

I dont think all hairsyles are so work-intensive. Only those animated and really, really, complex.

I don't actually think it's taht difficult. The hair falling would be generated in-engine through the physics, so unless they don't actually have any physics and make the animations in code, it wouldn't be that hard.

Of course, there are bigger issues & features to work on, but I think letting the graphics department go crazy for 2-3 days and give us better textures and colour choices would be highly appreciated by most pilots.
