Exploration combat sites

I'm interested in getting into exploration sites that drop faction loot. I understand what it takes to do the radar/magnetometric/gravimentric/ladar sites but I'm having some trouble figuring out the combat sites. All the resources on the eve wiki page seem to be outdated as they talk about using the old system of scanning.

So when I see people running sites and getting faction loot making them billions, what type of sites are they doing and how can I learn more? Like the people talking in this thread: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=57038&find=unread

I would think they would do it in a tengu type ship that allows them to be quick, equip the various exploration modules, but also fit a decent tank and gank.

I've heard that the DED sites that you can see on the star map are usually completely as soon as they are reset, so I would assume that most people do the sites you have to scan for.

I hope you can answer my questions and enlighten me. I appreciate any help!

You see the lowest rating sites on the map only, but there are a lot more that can be found as part of the "Unknown" group of cosmic signatures.

They're accessed through jump gates (just like the ones visible on the map) and are rated from 1 to 20.

As for complexes, you usuall don't need any special exploration module (other than a probe launcher to pin them down). Just note that depending on your ship and skills these sites can be significantly harder then other anomaly sites in your current region.

Once inside there's a chance for a faction ship to spawn during or near the end of the sight, which might drop faction loot. Some complexes also feature containers that might contain rare items. As an example, doing some 3/10 DED Angel mission, there's a chance for a Domination ship to spawn. Shoot it down and it might include stuff like a Dramiel Blueprint or other faction related stuff.

If you're lucky, the site will "escalate" upon completion, granting you another site only you'll be able to reach/pin down (similar to mission spaces; accessed through the exploration tab in your journal), which might be a bit harder and in a bit less secure space (these escalations can lead to low sec space). The more escalations, the more valueable your loot should get (but enemies might be harder, too).

Pretty much everything above is correct, except DED sites are only rated 1-10. 1-4 are in high sec, 4-6 in low, and 6-10 are in null (with no 9/10s atm, and a few other holes). Also expect dry spells as they will happen, that's just how the numbers work. And also just to reiterate, the DED sites you are looking for have to be scanned down with probes, not the static DEDs on the map.
