Auto-Targeting Missiles

"Rapid Heavy Missile Launcher II has no suitable targets within range."

WRONG!

Over ten "suitable" targets on Overview (aka, within range) -- yet, missiles won't launch.

A-T missiles have about a 40% chance (for me) to not work if the enemy hasn't yet targeted me.

Please fix this

Much like the auto-targetting system they have a fairly specific definition of "hostile target". They shoudn't be functioning at all until you're being fired upon.

I agree to some point that the name should be more clear about FoF/Auto-targeting missiles being purely retaliatory weapons and not preemptive ones. That's why I actually hate that they are called "Auto-targeting", since that seems to insinuate that they would work at any time a red cross shows up.

Right now, the behave the same for both NPC's and players, reacting to either entity only if you yourself are fired upon. That's why red NPC's still have to fire on you before FoF's start firing. Oddly, they only seem to follow this rule initially; once your launchers fire the first shot, FoF's continue to automatically engage any other hostile NPC, regardless of aggression.

At the very least, it should be pointed out that FoF's need a "valid" target to begin firing, and "valid" needs to be clearly defined as a target, whether another player or NPC or otherwise, that has actively engaged you already. That and they need to rename them wherever it refers to them as "Auto-Targeting" to something less confusing. Since they are already called FoF's alternatively, my vote would be to call them that in all cases, for both clarity's and consistency's sake.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

Thinking more about what Sobaan Tali had to say about A-T missiles and the logic to which the missiles will actually fire... I would say they're functioning as designed but it is a verbiage issue. The missiles are "reactive" by nature and not "proactive".

For PvP you have to wait for an opponent to target and engage you, thus dismantling the benefit of not having to target the enemy ship. Especially if you're in a BS and they're in a frigate.

Then for PvE you can't just engage the enemy -- have to wait to take some kind of pocket aggro.

None of these are clear game-breakers but the alternative just wouldn't be possible. How can the game decide FOR YOU what's consider a valid threat or not? But once something or someone else has engaged you then there's no doubt about how the A-T missiles should perform.

Still annoying. Ugh
