The worst part of being new to Eve, is the vet's...

OK, first I'd like to clarify that I'm not pissed or holding any grudges against anyone for saying long time players in NPC corps don't give proper advice to new players.

On the one hand yes, I've seen it a few times in my 8 years of being in RUN Corp and have corrected others when incorrect info is posted. One thing I try to do is acknowledge their good intentions when doing so. Also I've never seen any new player rage post and say they're quitting because some Vet with good intentions told them not to do something.

On the other hand I've seen lot's of griefer alts in NPC Corp chat tell new players to take their barely skilled improperly fitted T1 Frigates and go to Null Sec on the premise they'll make billions of ISK ratting NPC's. Time and time again I've seen those same new players rage post afterwards saying they were gonna quit cuz they lost their ship and was podded by other players. Same thing with those victimized by double ISK scams, grief hauling contracts, suicide ganks and new player corp awoxing as well.

In my opinion the other hand is far more worse than the one hand, if you know what I mean. All of the underhanded back stabbing griefing going on in this game causes more new players to quit than a couple of overprotective Vet's in NPC Corp..

Anyway, CCP just celebrated their 13th Birthday last weekend with a special game promotion to which they posted a news story and forum thread informing new players to reach out and contact long time Vet players to gain valuable info. That message was well received and acted upon by lot's of new players everywhere.

I actually didn't realize that was happening until the end of the weekend when I checked the Eve Information Portal and saw the forum thread. When I logged in that weekend I was quite surprised and overwhelmed by lot's of new players asking questions in NPC Corp chat. In fact I had 4 different new players initiate private convo with me to get more in-depth answers to their questions. In the process they even added me as a Contact with good / excellent standing.

One of those new players was Russian and while it was taking very long to communicate using Google Translate, I answered his questions as quickly as I could. While doing that I also contacted the Russian Help channel and asked them to invite the new player there since they could converse with him much quicker and more easily than I could.

Also during my travels round the Eve Universe that weekend, I had a couple more new players from different NPC Corps initiate private convo with me for answers to various questions. Was it because I'm a long time player still in NPC Corp or was it because of the Bio contained in my Character info ?

I don't know why they contacted me but they did and I helped them. I also informed CCP in their B-Day thread that their message to new players was well received.

As for telling new players to quickly join a player corp, I believe that's the wrong advice to give them. Case in point, one of those new players from the B-day weekend has now been in 3 different player corps due to being told he needed to join a player corp asap to fully enjoy this game. According to that new player, each corp had a different agenda / viewpoint compared to his own which is why he left them for another corp. Thanks to a friend of mine that new player is now in a player corp with complete freedom to do whatever he wants.

Despite what others may say, having a few older players stay behind in NPC Corps actually helps more new players easily get into and stay with the game. Even having overprotective Vet players in NPC Corps is better than not having them there at all.

All they're trying to do is keep the younglings from being griefed.

I arguable am fairly regular in several TZ in the Rookie Help Chat

I advise that a person learns scanning and such in an easy to fit and replace ship like the Heron or the Magnate before sinking a larger amount of isk into a strat or aterros. Not discouraging them, just I have seen enough people rush into a ship and lose it in the early days.

I never advise only mining unless that is what they enjoy. Yes, some folks DO enjoy mining.

I actually have an 'isk rant' running through all the ways an early player can make isk. FW, Missions, Mining, Exploration are all covered.

Look, vets, you want to see what is said there? Make an alt acct and come in for a few hours. Yeah, sometimes it is the blind leading the blind but there are some solid folks in there doing their best. Corp, Brel, Ivory, Jalan, and others who help the ISD bandage the wounds and point in the right direction. I have NOT seen much negative said of corps, usually we point them to the Recruitment Channel and or the excellent thread in this forum on what to look for and how to join. If a person specifically mentions exploration I tell them about Signal Cartel, if they want pvp then we direct them to the active recruiting newbie friendly groups that we may know of.

(hint) Recruiters . . . while you cannot recruit in rookie chat, get a word in with some of the regulars or become one once in a while. Subtle works, blatant ads don't, find out who the regulars are and send word to them what you are looking for.

The channel scrolls fast and is one of the most active I have been in in the game.

and I enjoy being there, doin my best to help the newbros get a decent start.

Well ... my main is in an NPC corp for 3 years and never left... Ugh ... because of well defined reasons (I actually question from time to time ...). Twisted I hope you don't mind expressing an opinion here. P

EvE supports and rewards the independent thinker, don't do what other people say you should or shouldn't if it's not what you think is right for your personal game and fun. There are a lot of risk averse and narrow minded sheeple out there, and with all respect for your corp and what they do for New Eden, it's mission and rules attract risk averse players. So if you are not happy with the people's mindset around you, leave and find another group. Go out, lose stuff, get into PvP, be the hunter not the victim.

I pay my sub with RL money, so ISK for me is the fuel for my PvP activities, and a multiplicator for earning more ISK to burn (or buy some injectors ...). If I run low on funds, I start looking for opportunities with quick profit and fun gameplay around. At the moment I'm fascinated of all the industry stuff. Smile

I'm my own NPC alt.
