selling to buy orders

People sell all sorts of things to buy orders for various reasons listed above. I know your 100mil difference comment was just an example, but there's a LOT of ISK in the game with lots of players simply not that bothered about a few hundred millions or even few billions or whatever.

I know this is a bit warped example but check out the last month's winner from iwantisk.com

http://iwantisk.com/leaderboards.php?type=past_months&date=42016

The winner for April 2016 won 15 trillion ISK in one month.

If you combine the winnings of players in top 10, that mounts up to 69 trillions.

People are spending billions in less than a minute to buy raffle tickets.

Now, that's figures from just one site and one isk spinning avenue in the game. People make billions a day in null carebearing, there are moon goo, there are PI empires, sleeper blue loots and salvages, etc, etc.

The amount of ISK in the game is HUGE and there are always new and various opportunities to make ISK.

As a trader, it's easy to get big headed and feel that you are buying from the fools and selling to the fools, and yes, there are lots of fools in New Eden, but for some, ISK is really not a concern.

PSA: Don't forget to set your sell to "immediate" when selling to a buy order otherwise you eat broker fee which is now 2.5% to 3%.

A TON of people don't know this, actually.

I think I tend to forget it because it's such a horrific piece of UI screw that obviously it wouldn't be like that, it would just charge you the broker fee if the order couldn't be executed immediately. :-(

Didn't they fix that at some point? I could have sworn that i don't get charged broker fees when selling into a buy order, no matter what i put in the duration box.

I could never understand the mindset of players who sell to buy orders when there is a large marginal difference between the sell and buy order. I dont think it has to do with a urgency for a quick intake of isk with some of them as i've seen a few where people have thrown away large sums of isk just on selling to buy orders, where as a little patience would of netted them more profit.

have any of you ever had this done and spoke to the person who sold it?

Sometimes it is just to get rid of the items, perhaps they live nowhere near a trade hub but periodically take a load of loot/salvage to market and so just out it to buy orders because they are not going to be in region for that long in order to maintain the orders.

Personally I will spot check a few items that may potentially be of greater value and put them up to sell orders but then will just sell everything else to buy orders.

Your question could be the same to those that leave wrecks unlooted and unsalvaged, why do that not monopolise on that? I think it is basically that it doesn’t interest them. When I was new I sold everything to sel orders as I needed all the ISK I can get, now I don’t need to be that fastidious.

That's what I thought too, because surely this is fixed by now, so I went and checked explicitly; charged broker fees on both buy and sell if the duration is not immediate, even though the purchase/sale itself was immediate.

I'll occasionally sell into the bid on price resets, manipulation attempts or other market aberrations. Yesterday's Mexallon trade is a good example. I wake up to Mex bid 76 / asked 89... way higher than Mex has seen in over a year. 60 mm units are bid at 76 or higher. I'm sitting on 500 million units bought in the mid 40s to low 50s... so why not take some profits? Dump 60 million to the bids AND rotate through a few stacks of sell orders at 89 to catch a little more of the trade for awhile while drinking a mug or two of coffee. Good fun!

buy order for item X, 1000 ISK
median sell price for item X, 10,000,000 ISK

Yea, why would you sell to buy?
Well, lets see...
number of item X on the market for sale, 80,000,000
frequency of sales, about 1 a month.

Yea, it'll only take me some 30 odd years to sell it direct, Ill sell to buy, thank you.

Last night I sold a lot of minerals and ice products to region wide buy orders.

A. There wasn't a massive gulf between the prices.

B. I honestly couldn't be arsed to move it all to a hub and set up sell orders for it. Smile

For several years before Module Tieracide (tm) I made ALL of my risk by buying Meta 4 mission drops, collecting them up every now and then, and selling direct to buy orders in Jita.

This made everyone happy:
Mission Runners got some extra isk for their 'junk.'
I made between 25% and 300% profit, which was fine for the time and effort I wanted to invest.
Buy order dudes in Jita got regular stacks of modules to re-list for profit.

TL;DR: If ya buy low enough, selling high is easy.
