Market alt

I've read about creating an alt who sits at a market hub in order to note prices and buy/sell stuff on behalf of the main character.

I think I have the idea, except I can't find any way to transfer the goods back and forth between the main and the alt that doesn't involve actually flying there and back, which seems to negate a lot of the advantage.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are going to need a Hauling Alt, or train your market alt to haul your stuff.

By the way, this kind of logistical problem is a substantial part of the game. Hauling safely for profit is an art-- some players find it their personal calling in Eve, and do it quite elegantly.

Contacts can help transfer stuff for one character to another. To move the stuff from one station to the other can be done by hauling yourself or hiring someone to haul for you. You can either set up an open contact or specifically hire someone like Red Frog.

OK, that covers it I think. thanks.

Hauling eh? Gives me something new to try at least. :-)

Yup, for junk that you want to transport yourself, look at training an Industrial ship (Bestower, Badger, Nereus, Hoarder, etc.) and make sure you have the skill Hull Upgrades trained to 3 or so, so you can install Expanded Cargohold modules. These will increase the space on an industrial from the initial 3000-5000 to over 10,000.

Be aware that if your cargo is worth more than the 1-5 million ISK or so that it would cost to outfit a combat destroyer that can one-shot your weak industrial ship, people WILL take the shot even in high-sec. This is called suicide-ganking, and is very common (because it's fun or because it's profitable).

For expensive cargo, if you create public (not pre-assigned to anyone) courier contracts that pay approx. 500k per jump between origin and destination, your stuff will very likely be transported almost immediately. Certainly within 1 day. Make sure to request a collateral in the courier contract, that is equal to the value of the stuff you're asking to be transported, so that if the guy gets attacked or tries to steal your stuff, he has to pay and you don't lose out.

for small "i must have this widget NOW!" stuff, an insta-warping interceptor is a pretty good choice for covering distance quickly.

for bulkier stuff and stuff you don't need 'right this very second', you can use one of the hauling corps that exist such as Red Frog.

if you're a member of a corp or alliance, ask your corp/alliance mates. one or more of them may own or have access to a jump freighter.

Some recommendations. Focus on small but valuable stuff to trade, can be transported with interceptors. For larger less valuable stuff you need a hauler ship (my favorite is the Wreathe). If possible don't transport ships, but build them near the desired selling / manufacturing point and just ship the materials. You don't need an alt sitting in the hubs anymore, CREST API gives you all the market data. I'm usually doing my logistics once a play session (30m-1h), either at the beginning or end, the rest is PvP+PvE. Orders and manufacturing jobs can be controlled remotely.

I'm my own NPC alt.
