Hey, guys.

Without EVElopedia, what is the next best thing for players to build and update a wiki community based on EVE?

And hell, what do the devs plan to do about all their in-game links stating "refer to EVElopedia for more information?" Hell, alot of training agents and new career agents had links to EVElopedia to teach new pilots the ins and outs.

And the fake Pax Ammaria book simply states "This book has a bit of a history" linking directly to an EVElopedia article-an article that no longer exists.

I'd say killing EVElopedia was a REALLY bad idea!

Such a ******* stupid idea. Colossal loss of lore related material as well as game play info...

The best place I found so far was the wiki from Eve-uni. But yeah removing the wiki here was not such a good idea, even if it hadn't been updated a while.SadSadSad[:

CSM10 warned CCP of this negative player reaction to dis-continuing evelopedia in advance. And so... outsourcing. It looks like they are essentially re-creating the "game manual" via Zendesk: witness the number of new articles related to Citadels, linked in the patch notes.

As mentioned before, just the fact that googling a subject related to Eve would result in a quick find was extremely helpful. I'm sure having Eve related content easily accessible didn't hurt getting Eve's name out there either.

I'm totally up for creating an evelopedia replacement, who's with me?

Definately.

Without EVEopedia EVE fan-fic will turn out like that Splinter in the Minds Eye book where Luke and Leia give each other, um, love. It's important to have a canon otherwise the Klingons and Cylons and other sub-par villians like the United Nations take over.

So, CCP ran this genius idea past the CSM and their advice was ignored, huh? I guess that tells you just how much CCP cares about player input in general and the CSM's in particular.

Back to the topic at hand; fobbing off the responsibility of documenting Eve to third parties, no matter how well meaning those third parties may be, is a terrible idea. CCP has no control over the content of third party sites and the information they provide may be incomplete, outdated or just plain incorrect. There's also the fact that these sites can disappear at any time. As someone else stated there needs to be a definitive, authoritative, CCP-official spot for players to find Eve information. Counting on Eve Uni or Goons to provide that is irresponsible.

Without EVEopedia an average gamer journalist could easily assume this:

EVE Online is set in 2016. The Amarr are representative of conservative Islam, the Caldari are a cross between the IMF and a Nike tattooed homeboy, the Gallente are somehow French and thus cheesy and rude, and the Minmatar were oppressed once and therefore dwelt on it so long they got stuck in a rut and rusted.

However, that would be cynical. Compare this to the Star Wars universe:

Star Wars is set in America, in 2016. Jar Jar Binks has refounded the Order of the Sith. Since there are only two, somehow there's over a thousand on the licensed computer game version. The Jedi were wiped out, but somehow political correctness survived. Somehow "somehow" managed to be used in a highly accurate review four times. Above all, you can install as many TVs in a hangar as you want, but without content all space operas turn into the Wiggles in Space.

(For readers, the Wiggles were a highly successful Australian rock band formerly called the Cockroaches. They invented Star Trek, just look at the outfits and how horrid dinosaurs can look.)

Please CCP. Make your work have context.

The most comprehensive Eve wiki that I'm aware of is Eve University's wiki.

Too bad it has no lore articles. For now the official stories for the game are as good as dead as a very large portion of fluff was hosted on the official wiki. CCP did promise to build a new site to house that, but frankly I'm expecting to materialize around the same time as player made stargates (so 2022 maybe?).

That is CCP's job. It is THEIR software and it is THEIR duty to document it. And not just the new shiny, but also all the essential mechanics, from how powergrid works when fitting to how to set up a corporation role.

If someone wanted to read everything possible to know about EVE's mechanics, that should be possible with CCP documentation alone.

Because if CCP doesn't knows what happens when you press a button under certain circunstances, who the f*** knows? Who's duty is to know it, even if it was implemented 10 years ago by a guy who has since left software developing and now grows artichokes somewhere in Germany?

It's all about priorities and I guess CCP's are elsewhere. Why documentation of their extremely deep and complex flagship product isn't a priority is beyond me, though.

We're going to rely on Google and 3rd party sites. And hope we don't get trolled or lulzed. Or just advised by somebody who got it wrong. Or somebody who posted something last month, and it's already outdated.

All IT guys know that documentation is drudge work, highly unpleasant, and most of all highly time-consuming, especially if there are frequent updates.... Somebody, anybody else do it, please!

Many forums reference posts from CCP or ISD or staff links directly to the old EVE wiki with the new updated link...

So a new player gets in that forum subforum, see the staff pinned thread and click the link and voila!
...doesn't work.

Other people were not supposed to link to that wiki to avoid overloading the hardware system.

Who knows wadappen when the DDoS occured.?
