My idea on what's wrong with the tournament and how to improve it for ATX

I have competed in the Alliance Tournament since AT2 and the general tournament game rules have been pretty much the same for the past 4 or 5 tournaments. The tournament format has been changed, some novelty gimmicks have been added such as flagships and there have been some minor point adjustments over the years, but each tournament has basically been the same.

Along with many other tournament veterans I am hoping that in ATX there is a massive mix up in the tournament, something that results in the theory crafting being done again from scratch. A big problem in these past tournaments has been the lack of variety in setups. It is all setups we have seen before, resulting in a basic rock, paper, scissors and meta-gaming. It became harder and harder to field a truly unique setup that didn’t frankly fail epically. Now, I hope that ATX is something spectacularly original and new, but in the more likely event that it isn’t, here is my suggestion to freshen things up and have a new take on the old format.

My idea on how to improve the tournament for ATX:

In essence what I propose is to split the tournament rule sets according to the stage. As an example I will split it into 4 stages. Pre-quals, group stage, knock out rounds and the final day.

My idea is that in some or all stages, a certain size of ship is made overpowered by a point reduction.

For example; in the pre-quals, make all cruiser hulls a lot cheaper than they normally are(excluding recons). Then for the group stage do the same for BC hulls and in the knock-out rounds make Battleships very cheap to field. It may be best to keep the final day with traditional, balanced ship points.

How I see this benefiting the tournament:

I believe that if these changes were implemented it would grant needed variety to the tournament. Teams cannot recycle other teams setups between rounds and it will give the theory crafters something to really get stuck into again. For the viewer it will make the tournament a lot more exciting to watch, since each match, each round will be totally different and there will be possibilities for some crazy setups again.

+1 to this concept. Sounds sort of fresh.

And as a moan, total hell death to a complete line up of blues vs blues in the final 2 stages.

That completely killed all interest I had in the last tournament (and game for 6 months).

Changing the point system for each day makes things unnecessarily complicated. Most teams have trouble figuring out one point system(they show up with too many points, ships with mods missing, players without necessary skills etc), let alone forming different tactics for each day. Only few top teams practice enough to take advantage of this, rest of the teams would just react to it either by ignoring it or by forming comedy setups(unintentionally).

The point system needs a heavy revamp though, right now it makes little sense:

- Destroyers are super cheap, especially now that they are boosted
- Battleships should be less expensive than CS and T3, considering they are immobile and can't fit links.
- CS/T3 are a too cheap considering how powerful they are
- Heavy Interdictors and T1 frigs are almost never used. They need to be cheaper.
- AF's, Inties, HAC's and faction cruisers are rarely used. (I take gang linked Cane any day over Vaga/Cyna). Lets make them cheaper
- Logistic are a bit too cheap. Lets not make them too expensive though, as they bring more tactics to the fight.

As someone who has also been taking part since AT2, certainly things need to change, although A complete overhaul would result in something far worse out the other end I fear.

I agree with making the theorycrafters start over again would be useful, but beyond that I'm still not sure. It's a tough call exactly what to do for the next tourney.

lets make everything cost 100 points except Badgers. TAKE THAT THEORY CRAFTERS!

seriously though, I don't mind the idea of varrying up the point system, or the structure. In fact, I hope that every Alliance Tournament offers a unique twist on the event, which would keep it rather fresh. Seriously, why can't we have an AT where you can only bring industrial ships?

I like the notion of giving different point discounts based on the day to keep things spicy, but I'm not sure if that makes things too complicated for the teams competing or not.

I think that reworking the point system is a little bit more important.
Right now two T1 Cruisers have a higher point value then a T2 BattleCruiser, which doesn't really feel accurate to me.

Naturally the point value of destroyers vs frigates needs to change in light of the destroyer buff.

Slumber Hawk rolls a dice and randomly assigns it to a shiphull class.

Slumber Hawk doesn't know anything about dps, tankability, main target call, support etc to make any intellectual point system.

Flagships as they existed previously are dumb. They either need to lower the point cost of all battleships and flagships, or allow any ship class to be submitted as the flagship.

I was thinking about that too. Would be pretty wild for a flagship absolution or something to show up, I agree that flagships should be allowed to be any subcap class. Course whittling down that officer fit damnation...

OP is at least doing it right even if I do not agree with all points made.

Props.

CCP can you flood SISI with a bunch of faction ammo for those of us attempting to fail at practices all ready?

Wormhole arena's (or emulation wormhole arena's), it's a mechanic already in the game that has the ship effects your looking for.
