Sub escrow?

I just have trained Margin Trading skill. Entered the game at one point and see a warning massage: "not enough isk in escrow to pay for the order", by journal I got few mils from a seller and from escrow half the price of the item I was trying to buy.

The thing is I had 4 times more isk in escrow than the bid price of the failed buy order. But the wallet was almost empty.

So the question is why didn't it use the whole escrow? Are there some sub escrows for each order and I have to have enough money in the wallet to pay for it?

My understanding of how the system works is it goes like this:
( Made up numbers )

You put up a buy order that wants 40% up front.
That 40% is taken from your wallet and held in escrow.
When someone sells to that order the remaining 60% is deducted from your wallet.

The 60% is not taken from the pool of ISK you have in escrow from having lots of buy orders up, it comes from your wallet.
