News: We're now on Twitter @CharityCitadel.

Thanks for checking this idea out. Just by doing that, you've shown you're the kind of player and person Eve needs most. Now, I've been told before that I like the sound of my own key presses too much, so before I get into the flowery details of this project I'll give you a bullet point tl:dr.

  • Who: Myself (Term, an explorer with Signal Cartel) and the folks behind Broadcast 4 Reps, Care 4 Kids, Best of Us, Operation Magic School Bus and EvE-Scout (so far). Similar groups can join the project and become a beneficiary at any time.

  • What: A large or XL citadel to be used as a market/clone/office hub open to all. Profits will be donated to PLEX for Good, ingame charities, and neutral service corps.

  • When: As soon as possible after citadels launch.

  • Where: Highsec. Exact location TBD. Definitely somewhere convenient.

  • Why: Popular citadel market hubs will be like an isk avalanche for their owner. A lot of citadel owners will be the filthy rich getting filthier rich, but they don't all have to be that way. Let's send one of those isk avalanches in the direction of good people doing good works so they can have snowcones.

  • The charity market hub citadel will match or beat the public tax rates of any other popular highsec hub. I think that's the beauty of this idea for its users: You will know that every transaction you make in the charity hub benefits good causes, and yet it will cost you absolutely nothing extra. You're not making a single sacrifice to use the charity citadel, you're getting the best rates available, with the cherry on top of helping people ingame and IRL who need help. Your hearts might very well grow three sizes. Medical facilities will be standing by.

There have been a few citadel ideas bandied about publicly, and though they seem well-meaning, they often try to make things too complicated to be feasible or fun, or they are over-ambitious, envisioning themselves as the new god-emperors of Eve. But me? I just want to put something neat in space that wasn't there before. Something with a simple yet meaningful goal. Something everyone in the game, no matter which flag they fly under, can feel good supporting. No meta intrigue, no delusions of becoming "space important". I'll be the janitor. If and when this hub becomes widely used I'll see what I can do about bringing in some exotic dancers.

Fundraising is private so far, and it's going very well. We hope to pay for the citadel ourselves, as I'd imagine there are already enough people asking you for your isk. However if you are interested in possible investment opportunities down the line to fund improvements/upgrades, let me know so I'll have an idea of the possible support out there. Please do not send any isk right now, the best way to support the project currently is to be active in the threads and spread the word ingame or through social media.

Sure, other market hubs will pop up all over the place, but who will benefit from them? People with hundreds of billions who want hundreds of billions more. Null entities with trillions who want trillions more. Maybe those people will use their citadel profits to do stuff you disagree with. Maybe you fly for a group opposed to the entities who will own the other big hubs. At the charity hub, you won't have to worry about making the ultra-rich richer, or funding a null entity you dislike. All profits will go to good causes. The main beneficiary will be CCP's official charity program PLEX for Good.

PLEX for Good has so far been a limited time event, happening only during specific times of natural disaster, and if this doesn't change then its share of the hub's profits will be stockpiled until its return. I am perfectly happy to send that isk to someone the community as a whole trusts for safekeeping until PLEX for Good returns. I will also lobby CCP to give us a permanent ongoing way to donate PLEX to IRL charities.

Another benefit of linking this project to PLEX for Good is that we're essentially scam-proof. All scamming involving PLEX for Good is met with a quick and absolute ban, so even if my intention was to scam, I couldn't get away with it, and the same goes for anyone else who works on the citadel. Also, a committee will be formed, made up of representatives from each ingame charity/beneficiary, and they will have whatever ranks and roles are required to see all of the corp's financial dealings, so they can ensure that everything is above board. They will also help set 'big picture' policy. No matter how successful the hub becomes (potentially trillions/month if it becomes a major hub), I will only take a reasonable salary set by the committee.

On a pragmatic level, widespread adoption of this citadel would avoid the "New Jita" problem of the main trade hub in the game being controlled by a competitive group, who could then abuse the powers of citadel ownership to change tax rates on a whim and even block specific groups from docking at all, essentially making the controlling entity the clear and final winners of Eve. The charity citadel, on the other hand, would remain a pure freeport forever, and charge everyone in the game the same tax rates.

I'm happy to answer any and all questions. I have set up an ingame chat channel for the project, "Charity Citadel". I will be in there whenever I am online, but if I can't be reached in there feel free to send me an evemail.

Nice. May I suggest that you make a report on the financial details, including your own salary, available to the public regularly - say on a monthly basis? Not only would that prove to your customers that your dealings are indeed "above board", it would also provide fascinating insight into the actual money flow in a citadel trade hub that otherwise nobody but their owners would ever get to see.

That is indeed part of the plan. The committee of charity representatives will be able to see everything going on in the corp, but the general public will also be able to see the citadel's financial information, in the interests of full disclosure and plain curiosity.

Seems like a legit plan, good luck. Once again this proves that the Eve gaming community is the best gaming community.

That they do. Most of the time spent on the project between now and launch will be forming a community of groups supportive of the cause, who can be called upon when the time comes to light the beacons of Gondor. If need be, of course, tax revenues from a successful market hub would easily pay for a merc or two or two hundred.

Perhaps protection (through good faith) can be bought by placing it in a 0.5 system like Uedama or Niarja Blink

I pledge support, as long as your transparency policy holds true.

Should it come under attack, I will undock in its defense, RL time permitting.

I suggest a mailing list to which supporters can subscribe, which will inform of impending attack.

Maybe a "blue list" of would-be defenders would be helpful?
Maybe an alliance which defenders' corps could temporarily join in case of attack?

And of course in case of attack a public "red-list" would be good so everyone knows who to defend against - or would joining the war dec do that?

And after all: maybe, just maybe, no-one will be so villainous as to attack this one.

I would be very disappointed in the EVE community if someone didn't attack it.

    Great idea though, OP.

More public begging disguised as "if you want to invest".

Screw that, especially tying this in to charity as some sort of noble endeavour.

PLEX4GOOD campaigns receive a lot of support within the community and most people don't see the need to chest beat about themselves. They especially don't need to advertise a charity as a way to obtain interest from investors.

Like the other stupid Fortizar citadel posted here recently, as soon as this Citadel is built, I'll be paying mercs to wardec and take it down.

Riiight, sure you will you faceless forum warrior. Lets just say I trust Mynxees, and by extension Signal Cartels, word a lot more than yours and leave it at that.

For the record I think a charity freeport is an excellent idea and worth supporting, even though being a naughty pirate I'd probably never get to use it.

That's ok, I'm not upset by that. Proof is always in the pudding.

Perfectly reasonable belief you have. As for faceless forum warrior, that's true of everyone here.

    No problem. It's all content.

Only an hour till the Keynote. I'm actually pretty excited about Citadels and all the new content they will bring to the game. It will be fun experimenting with strategies and tactics to kill them.

The charity citadel project isn't looking for a fight, but if someone wants to show up and create a sea of wreckage floating in space, they shouldn't be surprised if that wreckage is made up of the ships they flew in with. This is a positive and constructive project, but it is not a carebear project. This is Eve, and everything in Eve is a fight. Good ideas are worth fighting for, the notion of helping others ingame and IRL is an idea worth fighting for, and I've already had plenty of people and groups volunteer to defend the citadel when the time comes. Oh, and don't forget the mercs we'll be able to hire.

If you want peace, prepare for war. Ideally, it will not come to violence. But if it does, our market will soon after be filled with the salvage of those who equated a charitable nature with weakness.

Unless you are part of the owners Alliance or a Merc officially part of the war ... Concord will dispatch your ship, should you try defending the Citadel. Citadels in highsec can ONLY be defended by the owners corp/allicance or mercs hired for that and at war with the attacker.
