Eve runs great in linux! But the tearing... Interval one is better than interval immediate, but vsync doesn't appear to be possible in wine. Can anyone confirm this?

Maybe it is less noticeable at higher framerates? I play on a retina macbook with an nvidia 750M, my framerate hangs around 25 fps. (4k is a blessing and a curse). On my 40" monitor this is actually nausea inducing.

Tearing and proprietary nvidia drivers are an old and common story.

Personally I either don't experience it or don't notice it. Not sure. Most likely the latter. But I run it through bumblebee.

You should google possible solutions with your personal setup in mind. AFAIK it may depend on WM, and can be mitigated on OpenGL compositors (in particular, people seem to be having great success with vsync on compton).

I run awesome wm. I used to run compton, but disabled it to save some CPU.

I tried bumblebee at one point, but I think it didn't have any power management support - blanking the screen, suspend, etc. Though I easily sacrifice that for a better New Eden.

Thanks! Looking forward to messing with these when I get home. I was seriously out of ideas.

Bumblebee does have power management. It powers up the card only when it's used. Though latest nvidia drivers separated the kernel module into several pieces which broke the bumblebee powerdown routine because it cannot unload nvidia.ko because it depends on nvidia_modeset.ko. But both can be unloade manually, and the power switching is exposed through /proc/acpi/bbswitch. Also maybe it's already fixed - I see the bumblebee updated recently. But I haven't checked.

Still it's an overhead too (not sure how bad it is because I haven't used the official nvidia prime, so no data for comparsion), and not sure if it helps. Maybe compton is your best bet.

EDIT: just checked. Apparently module unloading is fixed.

4K out of a 750M? I like your optimism! :)

I have a 4K, and my gtx770 (not M!) can barely keep up, with the aid of the i7-4790K@4Ghz...

One of the problems of mac. For the money, the weakest video you can get. If you spend on a cheap mac, you still get a pretty cheap videocard. Spend more money, and then you get professional style graphics chips....not for gaming.

So if you want to game, buy two normal machines and put linux on them instead.
