Wine isn't a solution to the problem. There are graphic glitches under Wine and generally abysmal performance in linux with Radeon cards. Wine is a workaround which happens to work.

And linux is a pretty small market compared to the other markets, and I seem to remember reports of even the mac client sucking ass through a straw.

I wouldn't hold my breath for this if I were you.

They did support Linux for a long time then dropped it in 2009

WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place...

Yep. And that's why I wouldn't hold my breath, because they have had support, and they have decided to drop that support.

To be honest the wine response was the only one i could think of for someone useing linux that would work on the long term. There might be more addons for wine so you could get eve to work wonderful inside of it.

So that's ATI not the Wine guys. I have Eve on my Ubuntu 11.10 box with a E6600, 3GB RAM and 8800GTS 512MB runs perfectly. AA is a no no but otherwise max settings.

Just gotta know Linux really.

I was Crossover Games (A WINE wrap-around), and after some tweaking, I got my Radeon working just fine. The main issue seems to be the EVE client itself, which tends to freeze in some areas.

I've reinstalled Windows (didn't have the patience to keep fiddling) but WINE/Crossover is a workable solution, at least for Debian Squeeze.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

ATI has a reputation for suckass drivers. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure if this still works, but it's worth a go: http://www.dedoimedo.com/games/wine-directx.html

I ran it on linux as well but FPS is generally abysmal with Radeon FOSS driver, and that's not the AMD problem, because that FOSS driver is only supported Radeon driver on linux and official driver (because AMD ppl work on it), unlike nVidia which have their own blob. And what about graphics glitches in the game, like in the CQ?

Whether we'll see linux client is another matter, but running windows client on an emulation layer Wine provides isn't native client

Honestly, I'd just suggest you dedicate a small part of a HDD for Windows 7 (formatted with NTFS), obtain a legit version and install it there (not like it's still as expensive as older versions). This would most likely solve the issues (if you're having any; still cheaper than a new graphics card). I can understand people wanting to stay within their known environment instead of switching to play a game (doing it myself for cross platform programming), but it should still be much smoother than using any emulation layer. But to be honest, I haven't tried playing EVE under VirtualBox yet. The guest system's performance seems to be rather good, but I'm still no fan of such approaches. Especially considering the huge hard disks that are available these days.

Corvus: It's not just about starting the compiler on a different platform. If they offer it, they have to support it too. And compared to Windows there are just too many different flavors of Unix available (this is where the openess literally backfires). For windows, I compile a program and it will run on any available version (excluding very old versions of Windows and given it's a 32 bit binary). On Unix/Linux based systems this is a lot harder to achieve. Sure, it can be done, e.g. providing debs or rpms, but you'll still need like x different versions or editions.
