Hi all,
I am looking at doing some low/null-sec ratting/exploration. I hear great things about the Tengu and Ishtar. My question is concerning using the Proteus as a drone boat.

When I look for this online, I hear that it is horrible... but I am not sure why after playing around in EFT. It is definitely more expensive than an Ishtar, and has worse drone DPS; however, it has better tank, EHP, and can change-out subsytems for travelling (especially in null). Based on some (not too blingy) Tengu builds this has more dps (in just the drones), is cheaper, weaker boosted tank (better resist and EHP)

Any feedback either as to why this is a stupid idea, and/or how to improve the fit would be appreciated. The idea is to use drones for most damage, and then use blasters + web if anything small gets close... Warriors to help clean-up frigates of course.

Please post your fits in EFT format so they are easier for us to import and analyze.

Sorry; how do I do this? I do not post fits on eve forums often... I cannot actually remember the last time I did.

EDIT - never mind, think I changed it correctly. I can paste it into EFT now, and only issue is drones go to cargo hold

The problems with the drone Proteus are subtle. The fit you posted looks ok on paper but if you start to dig under the surface the problems really start to build up.

First thing: those blasters aren't doing much for you if you stay at range. Yes, they're for close-in work -- but then, use electrons for the improved tracking. Hell, if you're really just cleaning up stuff that gets in too close, switch to smalls or something. Neutrons are really only there for adding damage by getting up in something's face.

To that effect, Gardes without omnis (low or mid) kind of suck. I'm staring at 22.5+30 with 0.034 tracking with max skills. Experience tells me that their effective range is really only about 25-40km, a range that rats really don't seem to like to stay at. Which means you're humping them around as often as they're shooting.

So. You could switch to heavies. That would also justify your neutrons. The problem there is that now you're up close and personal with whatever you're killing, which means you can't just kite tank. So you need to drop down on DDAs to build in more tank. This can work. But all the usual caveats about blasters being kinda bad for PvE come into effect.

And now for the real problem with your theorycrafting: you're not switching subsystems. Or, at the very least, you're not fitting a covops cloak for travel. See, the covert sub doesn't have a drone bay. Ergo, you have to haul drones in your cargohold. Which isn't being enough for your drones and subsytems, let alone a mobile depot. Which means your biggest advantage of using a T3 is now gone and you might as well just use an Ishtar.

I've really tried to make this work (on paper; I haven't ever flown a drone Proteus on tq). I just don't see a way around that last tradeoff.

Awesome, thank you. That is what I was looking for. I always saw it as not working, but couldn't figure out how.

I have a Proteus fit I use in null, with drones, but it is not a 'Drone' Proteus' per say. It can carry 20 smalls, and has worked decent for me over the years. Right around 500 DPS fit with rails, kinda blingy, but it works. I don't carry a depot, just fit it and go.

Tengu is better, there's no doubt, but I think the Proteus is second best for null PvE, of the T3's.
