Approaching and range control questions for a new FW pilot.

Hey Everyone,

I'm trying my hand at PVP and looking for a bit of advice on how to start engagements. I'm flying in FW space and typically will be fighting from inside a complex. I'm trying to learn how to keep appropriate range on my targets, keeping away from blasters, getting close to missiles, etc.

So far I've been unable to control range with any success, blaster fits always seem to get on top of me within 1 or 2 seconds in of the fight, arty fits keeping range on me.

Is there a general best practice to engaging an enemy to start at a specific range?

Here's what I do currently:

Target around 30KM+ away - Double click space above target to begin flying - Heat my AB - At about 16-20KM hit orbit on my target with right click and the desired range (500m / 7500m) - Scram/Web with heat at 13KM.

In most situations I find myself ending up at 1KM from my targets in no time and I don't know why. My response to this has been to double click space again to attempt to gain range back. I've been able to get back out to range before but its usually to late, the blaster DPS has already done its job.

I've been flying Tormentors and Kestrels exclusively, I would like to keep doing this to get really comfortable with mechanics before branching out to different ships and flying styles.

I really enjoy the Tormentor and when I have been able to keep the proper range it feels really good. But I have a suspicion its from others mistakes and not my piloting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've also toyed with the idea of learning how to orbit with manual piloting exclusivly but feel that it may not be necessary in 1v1 frig engagements. At least when I watch videos on YouTube I've only seen that type of flying in fleet engagements.

Thanks in advance!

One more note Stormin (I haven't the entire thread that was posted above):

In many cases keeping range is a matter of fits - knowing your opponents, which ships are faster than other and how mid slots allow for utility webs.

For the kestrel, I would highly recommend a dual web rocket kestrel fit with a 400mm tungsten armor plate for introductory kite brawling. The shield rocket kestrel tends to pack more damage, but for solo the armor one is more likely to dictate range against other T1 frigs. The tormentor lacks the option for a second web.

Good luck with your hunting

Thanks for the tip, I've seen some armour and hull tanked kestrels. When I run out of my shield fit I'll try those out!
