Standing and major trade hubs

Hello,

Someone suggested to me that I should keep my character's standing in mind when dealing with trade hubs. I'd like to make sure I understand the implications of what I'm doing as a new player so I don't make mistakes that will be hard to undo. Specifically, I'm noticing that my standing with the Amarr and Caldari is going down as I play through missions (I'm playing as a Minmatar character and am doing missions for the Minmatar and Gallente). I'm concerned that this might be a problem when I eventually head over to Jita.

I gather the actual worries are

  • Being attacked by NPCs in areas I'm disliked if my standing goes below a threshold.
  • Higher costs when using particular trade hubs.

Are these valid concerns? Are there others?

Is there anything I should be doing to minimize these problems? I've heard that I should pick up the Diplomacy skill and think about doing missions for all four factions.

Thanks!

Jita is the busiest trade hub, but not the only one.

If you decide you don't care about going to Jita (Caldari) or Amarr (Amarr) trade hubs you could just keep going as you are and decide you'll be using Minmatar and Gallente trade hubs instead (Rens and Dodixie hubs).

If you decide you don't want to eventually go negative standings with those factions, stop doing missions where you blow up that faction's ships and only do missions against pirate factions (serpentis, gurista, blood raider, sansha...). Also, sisters of eve faction is mostly neutral but missions for them give a little gallente standings.

Yes, train diplomatic and social skills. Maybe google "faction standings repair plan" to find ways to fix up / boost your...well...faction standings.

Yes, those are valid concerns.

What you can do to mitigate:

- use trade alts to shop and private contracts to move the goods to an accessible area
- use the other trade hubs
- train the Diplomacy skill to gain a standings modifier and delay how many missions until the attacks happen (-2.0 standings).
- preserve your empire standings and only do missions for NPC corp standings.

You progress to higher level agents within a corp by building standings with that corp. Every 16 missions you also get offered an "important" mission that will affect your standings with all empires (because they hate/love each other). Corps don't hate each other; so basically you can do regular missions and decline the "important" missions. Also, decline missions that send you against the Navy elements of another empire; only accept missions that send you against mercenaries, pirates, drones, etc. You can see all this info in the mission window, and you can decline 1 mission every 4 hours from each agent, with no penalties.

Yup, diplomacy...

I have a 3 skill in it and even though I clobber Gurista's regularly, I still only have a -5 with them. They are the only group that 'hates' me.

Diplomacy is awesome...

Yep, those are the valid concerns,
once you -4 (?) with a faction their navy will spawn next to you should you be still for something like 15 + seconds in thier space.
Its fine if you just want to pass through and use the hubs but for any pve or pvp this could be either an massibe inconveniance and/or a death sentance.

My chosen profession (mercenary) requires that i be able to operate in all regions and i had my gallente and minie standings tanked to hell and back when i started, took me a couple of weeks solid to get to the point i was no longer kill on sight in their space.

Its a serious pain in the arse to get faction standing in the first place, its considerably worse when digging yourself out of the hole.
Its damn near impossible to get all 4 in high standinding but its reasoonable easy to keep them balanced.

The way to avoid taking a standing hit is to turn down any and all "faction kill" missions, these are the ones whereby you are required to kill amarr navy ships for example.

If you're already in the hole and need to "fix" it, try this. Takes advantage of the fact that certain newbie missions and the SoE epic arc missions give A LOT of standings (they're designed for newbies), and are repeatable every so often.

For your consideration ...

Caldari Navy: 9.54 before skill bonuses are applied
Faction Standing: No standing with any player faction.

How: Decline all player faction missions (see mission briefing icon) and all storyline missions.

Note that you can only decline one mission every 4 hours with an agent. You can use another agent while you wait. If the mission briefing states "every 4 hours" then it is safe to decline, but if it states "within the next 4 hours" it means a timer is already running and you have to wait.

Definitely all good advice for sure. Just need to clarify some things about Faction Standing :

Negative
-2.00 or lower standing, only level 1 Agents are available.
-5.00 or lower standing, Faction Navy NPC's attack when in their space.

Positive
+1.00 or higher standing, level 2 Agents become available.
+3.00 or higher standing, level 3 Agents become available.
+5.00 or higher standing, level 4 Agents become available.
+6.67 or higher standing, Corporations stop taxing refinery use.
+7.00 or higher standing, level 5 Agents become available.

Notes :
All NPC's accept Standings modified by Social skills.
Cosmos Agents only accept Faction Standings for access.
R&D Agents require specific skills with both Faction and Corporation Standing for access.
High Faction and Corporation Standings (unmodified) and specific skill will reduce amount of Broker Fees paid.

Formula for Broker Fees paid :
BrokerFee % = (1.000 % – 0.050 % × BrokerRelationsSkillLevel) / 2 ^ (0.1400 × FactionStanding + 0.06000 × CorporationStanding)

'The Plan' has proven itself time and time again to be the easiest and quickest way to repair negative Faction Standings.

Thank you all! With all your tips I'll be able to keep a good enough rating with all four of the major factions.

Lots of standing will make your leg tired. However if you sit every once in a while this effect can be reduced.

On a more serious note for future reference:

If you decide that you want to get into trading, I don't think it would be that big of a deal to start a second account and then train up that alt for the social skills needed for rapid standings gain and then Trade skills as well as maybe some industrial piloting skills and then transfer that alt to your main account after you have all 4 race's standings up high enough.

You can accept missions on the alt and run them on your main to get the standings for the trade alt with no combat skills.

I would take some effort but once done you'd not have to worry about standings on your main. Just use the contract system to trade stuff back and forth.
