Afraid to chat or be social

I have dabbled with EVE for several years now, but each time I return, I feel like if I speak in local or NPC corp chat, or any of the other channels, I am punished. The bounty system is so easily abused because chatting leads to random people placing a bounty on my head.

Now, I am a carebear, through and through. A simple check of my kill to death ration can confirm that. I also spend a great deal of time either mining or exploring. I make no apologies for it. But in an MMO that should encourage communication between players, one of the first rules of EVE is "don't speak." Yeah, I know I can chat to my hearts content and just accept random bounties placed on my head, but that just places a bigger mark on my head.

Anyway, I don't think removing the bounty system is the solution, but it would be nice if I could chat while having my fun without being labeled WANTED just for trying to be social in a social game.

Well, my 10 frees days is up soon and I am not sure I will sub again yet. But while playing for the last 9 days, it occurred to me that this is one of those nagging features of EVE that I don't enjoy. I like being social, but being penalized for it really sucks.

Fly safe.

AFAIK you need a negative standing to have a bounty placed on your character. A bit of ratting will keep that danger at bay.

Oh dear!

Just ignore the bounties, will you? They don't do anything. It's how we say hello in these parts.

Bounties mean nothing buddy. They don't effect you in anyway and no one can shoot you because you have one.

As for being social and chatting, sometimes people will talk sometimes people won't.
I will always chat if someone talks to me Big smile

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

If you don't have a bounty you stand out like a sore thumb.

The bounty is meaningless, the payout is limited to 20% of the value of whatever ship you're in, thus people are unlikely to hunt you down to claim it unless you make a habit of flying excessive bling.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I did not know that. Why did they changed it? It would be better that way imo.

Main reason why I post on the forums with an alt, don't desire a wanted title like my other char got from a disagreement on the forums. The wanted title is more of a roleplaying title then a "badass" detector.

I do enjoy riling up chars with 666666666 isk bounties though Bear

Don't be afraid to join up with other people with similar interests. If explo is your interest, Signal Cartel is a haven for explorers and carebears. They do have some rules about violence, but I'm not too sure on what they are. If you want somewhere to talk about explo or other carebear-y things, might be a place to look at. There's also a lot of other newbie organzations as well within the game that help all kinds of new players.

Eve sucks when you're not playing with other people. Oh, and bounties are worthless. Keep in mind that someone paid money that they can't get back to throw that on your head.

The bounty system is pretty pointless, sadly. If you're a carebear you'll have a tougher time mining since people love to try and "own" belts or whatever they say to justify the permit systems. It's happened for as long as I remember from various entities. Really, start looking for some 0.0 corps. You'll have a good chance of finding a group tucked away in some backwoods area where you can carebear away.

In the old system, to get a bounty you needed to have a bad security status, and when you lost your ship the whole bounty was claimed by your attacker. What ended up happening was if you were an outlaw with a nice juicy bounty on your head, you'd get a friend (or alt) to shoot you and you'd split the proceeds.

Nowadays, anyone can have a bounty regardless of whether they are an outlaw or a fine upstanding law-abiding pilot, but the payout is limited to 20% of the value of your ship - so it's not financially worthwhile anymore for the outlaw to have a buddy shoot him for the payout.

As for the law-abiding high-security status pilots getting salty over having bounties placed on them, they're all supposed to be omnipotent immortal demigods responsible for the death and destruction of countless NPC lives, so I don't know why they get so sooky about it vOv

Also OP, this is an MMO, just chat away wherever you want and make yourself some new spacefriends :3

Because npc don't count in that way. Otherwise concord would interviene when they attack you in highsec. What they don't. The bounty payout don't bother me. Just the fact that you should not be able to put a bounty on somebody, that never did something bad to other pilots or just even started playing.
Btw. Is it possible to put a bounty on a newborn pilot?

The DEVs removed the restriction because they realized that there are many, many ways to commit "crimes" or do generally terrible things without losing security status.
More than that... "good guy" and "bad guy" are relative.

Some examples:

- A guy in your corporation/alliance is disgruntled. He has access to pretty much all the corp hangers. He steals everything and walks away from the corporation/alliance.
Corp/Alliance theft does not affect your security status. The thief in question may have a 5.0 security status. Under the old system, you could not place a bounty on him. But now you can. And so you place a bounty on the thief.
------------- The thief responds by placing a bounty on all his former corp/alliance mates. In his eyes, you were all douchebags and the reason he left in the first place.

- You are peacefully mining in a belt. You see another mining vessel inching close and closer to you. You do not recognize this player. He has never been in this belt before. He has a positive security status and is in and NPC corp. There is nothing unique or interesting about his profile.
Then, when the player is less than 2km from your ship squad of Catalysts comes out of warp right on top of both of you. The Destroyers target and blow YOU up. The other player is unharmed.
Obviously that other miners was either an alt character or a friend of the ganker. Under the old system, he would be untouchable. But now you can slap a bounty on his face!

Please note that a bounty does not make a player a legal target anywhere in the game. It is a separate from the aggression and combat mechanics.
All a bounty does is offer a nice little prize if you decide to kill said player.

Yes. It is.

And I know where you are going with this.
Even though bounties really do not do much... making newbies "immune" from bounties for ___ amount of time sets a precedent and opens up a Pandora's Box of other things that newbies probably should be "immune" from.
And then the veterans will come in, make brand new alt characters/accounts, and take full advantage of those protections.

I appreciate your comment. I really do. But sadly this too just proves my point. Open communication is punished in EVE. But I get that it's part of the sandbox. I guess it's just not the sandbox for me.

Anyway, fly safe and have fun.

Well that was just mean. Of course 1mil is a trivial amount, but it is ultimately meaningless as I am not going to re-sub.

The last 9 days in EVE have reminded me why I leave every time I come back.
