In New York City, the trick is to use the store's restroom without buying anything. Or even after buying something. It doesn't matter much whether you're a paying customer or not. To get the key or directions to the hidden location, you have to win a mixture of a hustle operation (kind of like 'The Sting') and/or a brute force clash of wills (like King Kong vs. Godzilla). Only the strong keep their pants dry or avoid a public indecency charge.
