Launcher does not show correct server status

When the server goes down each day the status still shows as online with a player number. Even if I close it and start it again. How does the launcher get the server status and update it? If the window is open, the launcher should always show the current status or it's not really much use.......If the server is offline the launcher should "see" that. And again when the server comes back online you should be able to see that right away so you know when you can launch the client again.
