Without the story most kills aren't very interesting (always get bored after clicking a few of the +10b kills on zkillboard) . However EVE players are suckers for graph pr0n. Give us any of these:

  • Concord interventions per region
  • Freighter jumps vs freighter kills in system that have more than x freighter kills
  • Average kills per war plotted vs the number of outstanding wars a corp has

It greatly depends on the story behind it.

I've seen kills worth tens of billions that amounted to "wow, that idiot put all his everything in his officer fitted mission ship during a war, what an idiot". We look at those kills and laugh about them, but in a day or two it's just another shiny kill thanks to a foolish pilot.

I've also seen much less expensive kills that took far more effort or had much more entertaining context. Like the guys who sell ORE Strip Miners and then gank the buyers, only to loot and resell the items so they can gank the next buyer. What is compelling about a lot of kills isn't the isk value, but the facts surrounding them.

* Are you planning a kill mail that only shows if both buddies agree on it ? Roll
* Will loss mails never be shown again and only kill mails above x B ?
* Do wars reports become "Angry Buddie Lists" ?

To be honest, I'm mainly interested in how they were fitted, what damage was done and the hunt that made this kill happen.

Greetings Pilots!

We're doing a little bit of research for a project idea. We would like to know how big a loss has to be, before you are interested in knowing about it?
if you could vote on the below strawpoll:

We would be super grateful!

As an additional note, if you could take a moment to elaborate on what makes a kill interesting to you, as a response to this thread,(Eg, deadspace fit destroyers, frigates killing titans, PLEX hauling rookie ships) we would appreciate it.

Thank you for your input!

PS: We're aware that it's really the story behind a kill is what makes them truly interesting, but for the purposes of the project, we're most interested in the sort of information you get from just the killmail.

I think it's not so much the hard isk value either. For instance a 2bil worm would interest me more the an 8 bil anshar

The battle and the story around it is always more interesting than the ISK value of the equipment used and/or destroyed. Anybody can throw ISK at fights and brag or cry about it, but a gripping tale is well worth the read.

ISD Flowingspice,
The correct answer is "numbnuttery".

We want to be entertained. We want kills where there is a punchline or a big surprise.

Ex: When a battle badger smoked a baiting rifter (back when high sec was about fighting). When a single ship takes down a fleet. When a velator with reps takes down a raven.

If you want to experience it firsthand, let me know. You guys really need to learn about the game you have destroyed with the last few years of nerfs.

When I started pvp I remember my winning first battle. I was in a dominix and I had 2 hurricanes for support...good swiss buddies I haven't talk to for years. Well anyways, We beat a force double the size of our own and I will describe how it felt.

We were pizzing our pants thinking we were gonna get smoked. Our ships were fit terribly, I guess my only boon was that I had heavy drones maxxed out. When the fight started going our way we felt such an elation of joy. We were laughing on comms as the ships went down, and I felt such an adrenaline rush(I was shaking), being I was leading our squad. They had war decced us but we never saw them again. This is when I decided pvp was for me, although Eve offers many other interesting activities.

I've been playing since early 2004 and personally I preferred the game before the introduction of killboards. Kill mails are nice to get as it's something to remember the action by but people get too fixated on kb stats and forget eve is a game to have fun with.

As others have already said the work taken to get the kill and the story behind it is what important, whether that is endless hours waiting for the shiny battleship to undock and start it's mission or the crazy low sec brawl with billions on the line.

I'm with you on this point kill mail is all you need, I started around the same time, and it was action that made your name, not stats

When the person being killed doesn't unplug implants.
When the person being killed doesn't rage out like a hurt walrus.
When the person doesn't scream about following NRDS but accepts their fate, says "gf" or admits defeat.

IMO the best killmails are the ones that you link and people immediately ask 'how the HELL did that happen?'

My personal favorite is one of my first kills. I'm in a Vexor, and score a solo kill in lowsec against a T2 fitted non-failfit Sleipnir and its high grade Crystal pod.

There's just enough information in the killmail to deduce what happened but it isn't immediately obvious how I scored the kill. A killboard forensics expert would recognise that the Sleipnir pilot was AFK and that I had warped off and reengaged, and would thus conclude that I found the Sleip AFK on either a station or gate and attacked it, warped off to repair up gate gun damage, returned to finish off the ship and then the pod. (They would be correct).

which is why we have cops and congress doing what they wish.

A kill is a kill and even better when its done at long range with 1400mm artillery.

1 don't get jammed
2 stationary targets don't react well to 1400s
