Hello, what specific check boxes should I make sure are checked to see sites and/or targets for the event?

Beacons, which should be on as default, you'll see them on the overview.

When you get to one the Gurista ships wont be on your overview by default but just right click and 'add'.

the overview is the most important UI element in EVE.

Make sure to add the event Guristas ships to your overview! I didn't have them by default.

This. I did find the ship check boxes, but didn't know beacons were the default type for this.
