yup. Welcome to EVE my friend, welcome to EVE.

I've taken a training path on my combat alt (see sig for details) that I wouldn't actually recommend to most people. I've been in Frigates almost exclusively since I started. I do, however, now have really sweet Navigation, Engineering, Drones, Shield & Armor skills. While I kind of kick myself for not getting into some ships a little faster (Svipul FTW!), I don't regret the choices I made. Patience my friend, patience.

Time spent on those basic core skills is never time wasted. Patience is a virtue and a little patience now will reap huge rewards in the long run. The major, major downside to T3 Cruisers is the skill loss when they asplode. The last thing you want is to blow through half a dozen T3Cs and have to retrain the subsystem skills.

Take a good, close look at the Stratios and Astero or even the CovOps Frigate of your particular racial choice (Amarr? That would be the Anathema. The Caldari one is the Buzzard). If exploration is your thing, those ships can do the job every bit as well as a Legion, at a far lower cost in both ISK and SP.

The major downside to flying a T3C is that anyone who can get a lock on you, WILL want to asplode you. T3Cs make for nice killmails and, eve players being eve players, that skillpoint loss is extra special sauce (especially now that Medical Clones no longer need upgrading).

Welcome to EVE. It's a game that will reward you generously when things go well and kick you solidly in the balls when you do something stupid.

Thank you for taking the time to post :)

The T3, in reality, is more of a long term goal. For the foreseeable future i'll be flying the Anathema (once i have the skills)

I know what i am wanting to do is probably considered "odd" by most players in EvE, but with my decision to not join a corp (for better or worse), I wont have the crutch to comply with their requirements .

The main thing i'm thankful for with the responses I've had is everyone has made it very clear that I know the risks that are involved with my path choice, but not one of you has said "don't do it". This makes me happy :)

Having a Legion and (with Ralphs advice) having it fitted nicely will only be when I am comfortable with my position in the game and the amount of ISK i am sitting on. Thanks to you guys, it definitely wont be a "oooo shiny, I must have!" buy (as tempting as it is).

Kind regards,
Teium

30 lowsec systems last night and only 10 mill made :(

Only found 2 data sights and a standard sleeper (which I couldn't scan down to 100%)

Worst nights exploring so far by a long mile :(

Legion is not prone to being nerfed. Other Tech 3 rather are. So you will not awake one day with a "useless" ship in hangar that you trained a lot for.
Yesterday I have made 100M ISK in high sec in 2/10 gurista DED site. In Astero, having 200k SP. That is what I call good luck. Cool

There was a guy that posted in here a bit ago that claimed that he had a Billion isk worth of loot in a hacking can and it blew up due to a failed attempt. That tells me that you can make more than a Billion isk in one site. Apparently you can also spend all night and only make 10 million isk.

If you are looking for steady isk then exploration is not for you. If you like one-armed bandits or lottery tickets then you might like exploration.

For example in null sec I can run anom after anom and make a steady million isk per minute or better, that is to say 20+ Million isk bounty ticks. On rare occasion I can get a faction spawn that might drop something interesting but it's basically just the steady isk.

On the other hand I could belt rat. Belt ratting only gets me about 8 Million isk bounty ticks but you will get special spawns much more frequently. So you could have a couple nights in a row of nothing but 24 Million isk per hour in bounties and then have one night where you get a faction Battleship BPC and a faction module wroth 150 - 200 Million.

There are far more ways to make isk in this game than just what is stated above but they all will fall somewhere on a spectrum that ranges from steady isk to Jackpot or crap out.

For further proof of the lottery that is exploration, I present to you Mr. JonnyPew and his jackpot:

2.2 billion isk. In 1 night. In Hi sec. In a cruiser. (Granted, it was a pre-nerf Gila)

Yeah, i realised last night how much of a hit and miss it is. I made 100mill in 5 systems last night lol. I'm looking into a second income stream that I can do while i'm out exploring. I have a few options in mind :)

This makes it sound like a job or work. This is a game it is supposed to be fun.

Science in it's purest form and "play" are essentially the same thing. We have the phrase "play around with" which is basically doing something just to see what happens which scientifically speaking would be called experimentation.

So when I say this is a game and you should play around with it and have fun then that means just try out different things. Do things for no other reason than the experience of seeing what it is like.

There is no endgame to Eve. There is no ultimate goal that is built into the game mechanics that everyone is working towards. There is nothing that you need to be doing or should be doing or have to be doing or any of that. So there is no need to make the game job like and try and find the one thing that you can do over and over to make money to pay the bills.

So you can try things like exploration and mission running and mining and anoms and industry and trading etc... but at some point you'll run out of things to spend isk on unless you are out there PvPing and loosing ships regularly. So in my opinion you need to focus not on the isk / hour but the fun / hour.

I personally don't enjoy PvP. What I do do however is help run the null sec corp that my main is in. I help fund PvP activities for other players and try to get things in place for other people and just in general keep things going. But that's just me and how I play my game, I'm not trying to suggest anyone do that I'm just pointing out that there are a Million ways to play this game and you'll have to find yours but focus on the fun and not the isk. You can make isk doing anything.

Oh trust me, I'm enjoying sorting out my second source of income. I enjoy the research and the planning. I'm sad like that lol. I was in bed reading loads of things i'm going to try tonight and over the weekend and "play around" with them. I really enjoy trial and error :)

Honestly, don't worry about me having fun :) i'm thoroughly enjoying EvE. Haven't hand this much fun in an MMO in a long time. The biggest thing I enjoy is that I don't need to be logged in every second. I can fit EvE around me and still make progress :) other MMOs seemed like work when I was forced to login at certain times for raids etc.
