Custom Ship Skins

So, CCP wants to sell ship skins for basically $5+ each and everytime I load up the screen and look I think, these are pretty boring and not much changes from skin to skin from my original ship.

How difficult would it be to release templates for players who want to create their own skins for ships?

A photoshop template defining the viewable areas in the template for us to design what we'd like to see, we upload them for review, once approved, the skin is made available to others.

Hell, you could turn this into a skill if you wanted. Corp CEO creates a skin, each additional level lets them further control the skin they have created or create multiple skins. If I create a skin I only want available for my corp, I need at least level 4 ship design.

A corp CEO or Alliance head could push the sale of custom skins much better than CCP can push these boring skins currently available.

It's just an idea but one I think would prove very fruitful for CCP and the playerbase.

It would require CCP approve all skins or police them religiously or space would just be full of penises.

They where working on a system that allowed you to create your own skins in game. Kind of the same way you can get crazy with cars in some racing games or planes in warthunder. premade shapes that you choose the color, angle, move it, then place it in layers. I saw a video of it at fanfest a year or two ago.

Since then however nothing. Not even a mention of it since they showed the demo reel. That would be our only hope for it but I suspect they decided to go the aurum for premade skins rout instead. Its sad if they canned the idea, I was looking forward to that. I wonder what ever officially came of it.

Have you seen some of the hulls? No reskinning required for phallic spaceships.

The only thing CCP need to know is how to make cash from your custom skins. When they will find it out - sure thing, ya'll get your custom skins.

How to cash: the user opens the skin tool, creates layers, adds shapes, adds colors. every layer, every shape adds aurum to the bill and when you like your custom skin you can click purchase. optional would be the buttons 'try' and 'save'

what I think will be problematic is loading all the custom skins. jumping into jita and having to wait until hundreds of custom skins have loaded ... no.

and there is still the Penis / Political Symbols etc problem

Shhh! Apparently the devs don't like it when you crack wise about that.

edit: I did mention this idea to some Goons a while back, asking them what a Goonfleet Issue $hull_of_choice would look like. They replied that they already got by with the Interbus SKIN for Gallente ships, since their chief colour is yellow.

But it would be fun to have your own corporate skin, sure. Rangers Combat Fleet Division Deimos? Hell yeah!

Considering it's the client installed on your computer that will need to store all the customised skins (so your video card can draw them on your screen), how much bloat are you prepared to accept for your client to store all those customised skins?

If the skinning system could be set to only display your custom skin to you but everyone else will see the default skin, then only your client will need to store your custom skins, but if you want everyone to see your custom skin, it will have to be downloaded into everyone's client, and every other custom skin will need to be downloaded into your client.

I'll grant you that a single custom skin won't need much space to store in the client, but multiply that by how many times for how many players, it will add up.

Depends on how big the files are. If you fire up the game and turn off the advanced shaders, you'll see what the plain texture looks like underneath: even the high-res texture couldn't be more than a few megabytes, if that. My understanding of it is that all the glossy metallic effects, logos and lettering are actually applied on top of the base texture using next-gen shaders and overlays which alter the base texture in real time. Making a custom skin possible would probably involve having to edit two separate layers: the base and the overlay, which would most likely have to be made and uploaded separately.

Oh would you look at that! A fresh batch of them is currently on SiSi! What a time to be alive!

And that would be terrible!

Not that it would change anything though. I could have a ship with a custom yellow and black stripes SKIN (with a tiny soldier hat and a bee sting) and they would still shoot me. Go figure!

Easily fixed by custom checkbox settings on each side of the equation with the default being 'off' for the choices:

Custom Ship Skins:
- Share my custom ship skins
-- With my accounts only
-- With my corporation mates
-- With everyone
- Display Custom ship skins
-- Only my own
-- Only my corporations
-- Everyone
-- Custom Person/Corporate list: (Fill in list, possible maximum list)

If you share with everyone, and show from everyone, yeah, you'll have some bandwidth/space chewing when you change populated systems.

I do wonder, what happens when you reach Ship Design level 5?

The same thing is done with Alliance-logo's, so it is possible. Perhaps only allow this for alliances so it wouldn't cost CCP too much time approving all these different designs.
