So this guy ************ convo's one of our members that killed him earlier today. He wants us to escort him from Aubenall & bring in 7 caps into our system; naturally we accept..

He jumped in 3 dreads, 3 carriers and a rorqual. He paid us 325 mill and offered us a fully fitted tengu in exchange for our "Honor".

Separatists don't honour their word , noted.

IMO you honour your word, but then I'm a merc, our entire livelihood relies on our reputation so that's just my biased opinion,
Personally I would have made some tiny stipulation in the wording of the agreement to catch him out ,
that way you could retain your "honour" if he wasn't on the ball (which he clearly wasn't).

Big difference between Pirates and Mercs is the CONTRACT between parties. Glad these Pirates outed themselves. They make Mercs look good.

On a side note - A RL Merc friend lives the dream working 6 mnths in the mid east and 6 mnths Bangkok, always wondered where the Bangkok of Eve was?? ( Maybe a shuttle service knows )Blink

Thieving pirates discuss INTEGRITY; Anarchist gankers give us LAWS; and Whoring merc's cry then blow off clients with INSULTS.

Back on my pirate days (another toon) ..... well I guess I left piracy when it was worth being one.

You sir would have been malcom and kicked out of corp faster than you could have edited that chatlog.

Times change I guess.

While this may not entirely be what this thread (end up being) is all about I can say that 10 years ago there was a time when "pirates" where actually defined well under that label and did behave in a somewhat honorable manner when they were paid.

That is, to put it short: ransoms were honored back then.

Protection rackets happened too.

Players actually made a living off piracy. I remember a fellow who once blew up my ship posting about how wormholes and piracy had the same payout. He left piracy to give wormholes a try you see.

This was 2009. I have not seen him since 2009. His CEO used to post stuff that could have been put together as an "Eve survival guide from being ganked" and every player would know that title if it have ever been written.

The game lost a lot when pirates stopped being pirates and turned into.... oh I don't know.

Sometimes I think CODE. is saving the game, not for what they do, but for being a collection point for players who could think of worse things to do if there was no CODE.

Who still does this? Its 2016 - everybody by now should know two things - (1) never pay ransom as you will be blown up anyway; (2) dont deal with people you dont know/trust - which in eve should be just about no one.

The only pirates that I ever met that honored ransoms were the tuskers (are they still a thing?). I been playing now for over 6 years straight everywhere mostly with pirates of one form or another. Uniformly my corp or alliance mates always blow up the target despite a ransom being paid. I personally feel a little guilt about it - but not enough to refuse my split - only just enough that I let my corp/alliance mates do the negotiation. In short, never pay the ransom you will be blown up anyways. Not that it matters - the People who should be reading this wont, and even if they did they will not listen anyways...

You bring up an interesting point.

Back in the days of olde, noobs hardly got splatted in lowsec. You had to be screwing around and asking for it of course. But many a noob, and I was one, slowboated (this was before WTZ and most noobs didn't know what a bookmark was) even through places like Amamake.

(Once, in a system called Bandcamp, I sat on a station undock wondering why a cruiser was flashing on my overview)

A sort of consensus existed back then that it was pointless to go popping noobs. What did they have anyway? Rookie ships didn't drop much. And what do you do, ransom their free ship for a billion ISK? It was "cheaper" to say "hey noob, you know this is lowsec, right?"

(Once there was a singing pirate in a Thorax, who would sing in local with "Nobody knows, the trouble I feel...." I never hung around for the duet)

Rookie ships and frigates were not worth the trouble. Nobody wanted to take candy from a baby and such kills on the KB was not something to be proud of.

But woe be unto he who should know better, but didn't due to laziness, hubris, or whatever foibles!

Back then, scanning was not so easy. So if you have the stones to run a gate gauntlet, or the bookmarks, you could even run lowsec missions - ah then there were pirates who lived off booty and ransom. If you were in the system running missions in a big ship, you officially knew better. If you did not, or forgot something, well then, so what. Deal with it. You could escape, or lose a ship, or some ISK.

All of that changed at some point.

Ransoms honored? Heck it became more popular to demand a ransom THEN pop the target and then come here and brag about it.
Noobs left alone? Not any more. Everything that moved had to die. No reason beyond "hurf blurf EVE IS A SANDBOX GBTW NOOB". Most people who deal with autism are specialists who get paid for that, but there is not much motivation to pay a game sub and do it for free it appears.

The worst thing, and it appeared to start happening around 2007-2008, was the action of befriending a noob, lure him out to lowsec, and pop his ship, then keep the pod scrammed there while pointing and laughing (literally of course). It's one thing to want to kill people in game, it's another to make your game all about being that kind of person gaining meta-jollies while claiming it's all in game. Do you spend time trying to figure that out? Nah.

But I digress.

Piracy died because nobody would pay a ransom. Not because they were cheap, because they didn't want to be double the fool for a loss of one ship. They did not want to be the butt of yet another post where it's like "hey we ransomed this guy, then blew up his ship. Then we ransomed his pod, and he paid it, then we blew up the pod!!!! WE'RE SO LEET!!!!"

Most players would rather just shut up, fight to the end, and GTFO.

(and then through 2010-2012, bask in the tears of bored lowsec gankers posting over how dead lowsec was)

On the upside the game got simpler: you go to lowsec to get into fights P

Honestly there is a big difference between true newbs and the mindless souls that wander around oblivious to everything around them. OFC since eve is a game of alts its difficult sometimes to tell the difference - even more so now with the injectors.

Luring folk to danger is something that I recall being a thing even when I first started way back when. As far as I can recall, its always been a part of the game. The goons were notorious for recruitment scams that got folk to put everything they owned into a freighter and take it out to null. Recruitment scams I always thought were kinda low - but oth you had to be blind to have not read about the goons and their ways.

You all mother ******* talking about the good old days when pirates.. That's all bullsh*t cause I have been playing for 10 years and I have yet to meet anyone that wouldn't have done the same thing.. Ransoms are never honored, need I remind you this is a game where the largest alliance robs people daily with recruitment scams, & stealing their sh*t when they are supposedly moving in? There is no honor in Eve, there has never been.. What I did is nothing compared to all other fu**tards running accounts.

He's lucky we only killed one.

He offered me 325 million to jump 7 capitals into my system.. He stated that once he jumped them in, it was his problem. He didn't even wonder why there were only 20 people in coms and I told him that we had about 50-60 "protecting" him, he also never mentioned a rorqual.. If any other poor nub would come and ask me for the same thing & literally offered me a quarter of what his ships are worth to help him; I / WE would do it again.

So as I said before; Yarr b*tches.
