Hi,

Just started playing and have had a heat issue with my MBA.

I have the graphics/effects and performance settings turned down to lowest settings, but just sitting in the hanger with a static backdrop causes the MBA to heat up too much so much it's too hot in the top middle keyboard to rest my hand on.

I've tried smcFanControl to increase the fan speed before i started the client, but this delays the inevitable.

Has anybody had any success with Eve on MacBooks?

Kind regards,
So.

You've got it right, just crank up the fan with smc and leave it there when you're playing. Should be fine.

First and foremost - you are using a super thin laptop which should shed heat but it depends on the surrounding environment.
It has been a long time since I have played with a MBA, but I do know from my iMac, Apple's thinner is better isn't always the best, probably worse for people who want to play games.

You are already on the lowest settings, so I would work on air flow in your room, desk etc. see if that helps, as the MBA shell is its heat sink

I have the same problem on a 2013 retina MBP. The Cider implementation of EVE on the Mac is just extremely resource intensive, pushing CPU /GPU to full throttle, thus causing more heat to be produced and fans to spin up to max. This hasn't caused any immediate issues so far, except for it being annoying. I suppose that in the long term, the increased heat stress caused by such intensive use might affect the longevity of your computer. The poor cider performance seems to affect especially Intel integrated Gfx, while Cider seems to provide better support for Nvidia and AMD Gfx on Macs.

Anyway, having Intel Gfx myself, I only use the mac client to quickly check on EVE. For longer sessions I've made it a habit to boot into Windows via bootcamp. The game performs much, much better, looks better, and fans only rarely spin to max (oddly, when I use the probe overview, for example).

So, to sum up, the sad truth is that you'll have a much better experience with EVE running it under Windows on your Mac instead of in OSX and the Cider client. The HD 6000 Gfx on the MBA and the Iris Pro Gfx on the MBP provide decent performance for laptops, but unfortunately this only shows when running the game natively.

I don't want to start up bad rumors - I was checking on the Cider and DX11 updates

I haven't seen anything for Cider, I am assuming it will die soon.
DX11 seems will be supported by years end.

If you know how, go to WineHQ and and instal EVE via wine.

There is a beta version of wine that has DX11 support(ish)
Would like to know more from CCP on the matter
