Project Discovery, karma damage

In case you missed it, the patch next week will feature Project Discovery, a real world crowd-sourcing effort to do some kind of biological pattern recognition task, kind of like Amazon Mechanical Turk. Players who participate will be paid in ISK. I did not see this feature described in the New Feature Announcements so I am commenting on it here.

Besides the complete nullification of the fourth wall which is probably very disturbing to the role players, this bizarre intrusion of things which have absolutely nothing to do with EVE being inserted into the game, is going to do serious damage to the karma of the game.

As someone who wants to see CCP making Eve a believable sci-fi universe I share your concern somewhat, although If it can be seamlessly integrated into the game then I don't see a problem with this. It does seem to be something which could make sense in the concept of a futuristic research corporation such as SOE, although I do have my doubts about how CCP will integrate it.

Also does it pay out ISK directly, or goods which can be used or traded? The later would be better than a direct ISK payment IMO.

Edit - ISK and SOE LP I see, so I guess SOE items will be dropping in price, and perhaps the Nestor might be worth using.

Good thing they are actually trying to marry it with EVE lore. Have you played the mini game on sisi? Have you seen the SoE news?

There is absolutely nothing forcing anyone to play. Project discovery was very intent on seamless integration and for RP it does fit in the story-line very well so there is no big fourth wall nullification. So why would the RP community have a problem with it. Generally, the RP community enjoys when RP contributes to RW science. Also, I don't see how doing something good can do serious damage to the game.

As part of said RP community and in some of the more general chat rooms, all the RP'ers I see either don't care or are totally looking forward to Project Discovery, since it matches IC lore-wise what people have already been RPing doing to some extent. So it's a great addition to the game.

Try it on test server yourself. I think it "blends in" with EVE online and not once it made me feel like it did not belong in game.

In case you missed it, CCP is creating lore for Project Discovery, so that it doesn't break the fourth wall.

And you've completely missed what EVE is about.

Finally, as far as karma, you're gaining lots of karma damage right here with this thread. You're arguing against a project that will help science / actual people, which is not a nice thing to do. It's like arguing against Plex4Good after a calamity, when everybody else is trying to help out.

As it's been said above, if you don't agree with such things, simply don't participate.
