Why aren't the items on the market in English? Eve seems to be in this weird language that's almost but not quite english, it's missing a lot of u's and a lot of z's are replacing s's which means that many hours are wasted searching the market for misspelt items.

Why is eve not in English, and why isn't Icelandic a language option? This game is probably the only exposure any of us have to icelandic culture other than when one of their volcanoes inconvenience the rest of Europe, and I'd like to see the language.

Do not fight the inevitable, resistance is futile! Let go of the 'u's, embrace the replacement of 's's with 'z's, and be thankful units and dates are logical.

There are plenty of sites on the internet that can teach you Icelandic; and trying to play a complex game like EVE in a language that you don't understand is a pointless exercise.

Around 20000 years ago the climatic change on the earth break loose and Mount Doom (Iafjatajocu......) on iceland exploded. Every single man, woman and child on the island died on this day. And their language with them. Very sad, but true story. Cry
That is why nobody in new eden remembers icelandic.

Not sure about z's, but missing u's sound like American spelling to me (possibly), although I'm not sure what exactly do you mean.

Just be glad they're not using the honestly God-awful Imperial system like us idiot Americans seem to love to do. Everyone still flies on the right side of the docking lane, though.

As a friend of mine use to say, "Perfection is always a work in progress. At least it's also always worth working for."

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

Thanks, but I've got all the exposure to Icelandic culture I care to have.

A friend of mine teaches English as a foreign language, according to him EFL teachers from the US are more common around the world than those from the UK and other countries that use UK English. In the case of Iceland there was a US airbase there up to about 10 years ago, so there would have been American service personnel available to further "corrupt" their English ; incidentally the same is true of Japan.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Of course, modern UK English is a perversion of the original sacred old-school English, you know the original unaltered dialect from way back near Nottingham.

All other dialects are pretenders.

Reminds me of having played Metro 2033 in russian even I don't speak russian - makes for the atmosphere, feels even more strange and dangerous.

Keflavik wasn't an Airbase it was a Naval Air Station, though the USAF had some Airstations in Iceland which were Radarstations controlling the air space around the GIUK Gap.

Same here, i played Witcher 3 in polish, it added very much to the atmosphere of the game.

To be fair to everybody, the game ought to be in some amalgamated multi-hybrid pidgin language. Not Esperanto, that's only Euro-Latin languages. Maybe something from Madagascar (mix of African, Asian, and European immigrants (and unique-ish animals)) would work.

But seriously, this American and his Canadian roommate learned some serious Japanese from deciphering the Nobunaga's Ambition rule book from Japanese. And from battling within the game, while dealing the with original-Japanese UI. Dang I was naive and stupid, after I decoded that book I taught that bustard all of the rules and how to select from the kanji dropdown menu options! Smile

As a non-native english speaker, I am never quite sure whether something is spelled with or without a 'u' or whether it should be a 'z' or an 's'. I also like the 'zed' more than the 'zee', but the 'zee' rolls off the tongue much easier, so I often find myself saying 'zee'.

I just stop typing before I get to the 'yze'/'yse', 'or'/'our' and 'og'/'ogue' part and let autocorrect fill it in. The Eve market works with partial terms, so that's ok too, I suppose. But I can't think of anything in the game where this is an issue anyway, really.

Recent CSM meeting minutes talks about adding the ability to search the market by acronyms. MWD for example, or stabs. Which should make the issue moot.

As a non-native English speaker I usually correct my coworkers' spelling. My theory / explanation / justification is that phonetic language speakers will learn all the spelling rules as rules, rather than as a subconscious ability to spell; I'm well aware of the alternate spellings for various words, including siphon vs. syphon for example.

But yes, the in-game English seems to have the American spellings.

Ahh, Keflavik NAS... ended up there for 2 years as a kid when the USAF sent my Dad there to repair aircraft gun cameras.

30+ years later I still remember playing in the lava field that was my back yard. Smile
