Launcher crashes on Startup

I've had this issue for a while now and I'm at my wits end with it. I get this error any time I try to open the launcher. I have an older release of the launcher (969236) that still works, and the only reason I can still play the game is that every time there's an update I have to reinstall this older version in a newer folder, let it update, then immediately close it before the launcher auto-updates itself. Then proceed to use it day-to-day via the exe file. Every version onwards doesn't work and crashes the same as in that screenshot.

I've tried reinstalling
I've also now tried completely wiping every trace of EVE off my computer (all files/folders, registry and AppData configs), starting again from scratch and still no luck.

I know from the logs there's been plenty of crash data submitted, yet this is still an issue.

The new launcher was absolutely great until this started happening. I don't what's been changed with the bundled Webkit engine, but please can this get looked at? There's no way I'm the only person having this issue?

Let's see if I can help. I'm curious to see your logs from %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\Launcher - could you put them in a Dropbox or Google Drive and send me the link in EVE mail?

One thing you can try is to set an environment variable called QT_OPENGL, either to 'desktop' or 'angle'.

You can set an environment variable by right-clicking on your computer in the Start menu, select Properties, then Advanced System settings, then Environment Variables...

In the dialog that comes up, add a new System variable. Enter 'QT_OPENGL' in the name field, and 'desktop' in the value field (without the quotes).

This appears to have entirely solved my problem! What is that doing exactly?
