Google achieves AI 'breakthrough' by beating Go champion

Really interesting the way they planned the machine learning, I think. First, it identified patterns that worked more often than others. Then, it did many, many repeated iterations of placing pieces and again tested which worked better than others. No serious human strategy algorithms coded in. They just used a computer's power to do multiple repetitions very quickly to test and compare results.

Also one that can defeat all of the rooms in Super Mario 64. Who here can honestly say they've achieved that feat?

European champion though, who is a 2p professional in the east. I'll wait untill they managed to win against a 9p :)

I thought this article was the best that I have seen.
I think we have taken the first solid step toward the AI singularity.

I wish EVE was more like Go. Sit down and make the start of the game as even as you can, rather than what it has become.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

Yes, pretty hella exciting, if you think about it. Sorry to repeat again from the OP, but to me the interesting thing is the way they set up the AI development project. They didn't try to come up with some Go strategies decision-making algorithm. Go is so big or "global," each stone can be used for offense or defense, or big strategy or tiny tactics. It's hard to imagine an algorithm that actually evaluate the big picture on the board, and make moves that aren't very tidy, and pretty predictable.

So what they did instead was to load the program with data on certain successful patterns. Then, used a computer's power to very, very quickly run through many, many variations of next moves. And from those, discard the ones that didn't yield good results, and test further the ones that did. So over countless iterations, "machine learning." The basis was human thought (using patterns developed by human IQ-genius-"intuition"). And then using that to use the machine's super ability to test and retest situations, and give it a way to evaluate and store results. So simple, and so brilliant.

Can this be applied to other analog world things? Welding fittings onto pipes maybe, outside of a rigidly programmed assembly line setting? Air traffic control? Aerofoil wing design, taking chaos theory flow patterns into account? Crazy arse rogue drones and sleepers learning patterns about what does and doesn't kill invading ships-- and you're the current one?
