Support proportional navigation

A new player complained about the tendency of ships to overshoot their target when they do an approach.

In many cases this is desired behavior because you want to get to the target as fast as possible.

Nevertheless, in some circumstances you do not want to overshoot.

The main option in those cases is to orbit.

However, another idea might be to support proportional navigation which would allow a "Follow" behavior. With this kind of ability the player could approach an object without overshooting it, albeit at a slower velocity.

Ships don't stop on a dime. There is already the option to keep target at range or to orbit at a specific range. You friend just needs to learn how to manually pilot and stop relying on easy mode navigation.

This is the law of ship progression!

To be fair, newblet's complaint is more long the lines of, "Why isn't the ship's navigational computer smart enough to automate an approach to a stationary object at a velocity that won't overshoot?"

Don't really have strong feelings about the merit of it either way (well, mostly opposed as there are many circumstances in which I want that overshoot), but addressing it as if it were about inertia is a mischaracterization.

"Help, I'm bored with missions!"

Droidster... The original post you linked is still open. Why didn't you just post this there instead of making a completely new thread?

Kind of silly I think.
