Capital ships: functionality outside of fleet engagements?

Hi all,

What are the uses of capital ships outside of fleet engagements? I've seen a couple of videos of carriers ratting or running sites. But why? Is that not overkill?

I know nothing of capitals. When I seriously started my EVE career I've always had the idea that I'll never fly anything bigger than a battleship. Because of cost, training time and me being mainly a solo player/small corpsman (1.75 meters, badum tss).

Now, after having trained for basically every subcap ship save the Marauders (currently training) and their preferred tank and weapon system, I'm kinda looking at capitals, tempted to train for them after Marauders. But what what can they do, exactly? What use would I have for them as a solo/small corp player that runs missions, does WH sites, does mainly frigate and cruiser solo pvp?

Also, if I want to join an established nullsec corp at some point when I'm done messing about casually, would me being able to fly a capital ship be a plus? With or without experience (I imagine there will be training sessions for new/aspiring capital ship pilots in corps/alliances?) or personally posessing such a ship at the time of applying.

Thank you for the information!

Carriers are often used for ratting in nullsec and some wormholes because they don't need to fit more than a capital repper to tank the damage. Meanwhile they wield over 2000 dps which makes them able to speedrun all combat anomolies easily.

Capitals don't have much use in small-gang stuff, since you need to properly back up the capital or it will get swarmed by smaller stuff and killed quite easily. They are supposed to attack bigger ships or be the logistic-wing of a fleet . You need a good fleet before you can get the best out of a capital ship

Wormholer for life.

I'm training up caps now after skilling up sub caps myself and I wonder if this quote will still ring true after FAUX's are introduced. Then carriers will be used more for their fighter capabilities than repping others. Interesting times ahead indeed.

Lots of nullsec pilots use carriers to jump supplies out to null.

In NPC null, you can undock from a station and be fairly safe if you just need to 'take a look outside'.
Engaging is another decision altogether though... It's common to bait a loan carrier into a timer, then hot drop it.

I mostly used my carrier for logistics purposes when i didn't have access to a jump freighter. It's a step to independence for Nullsec pilots.

In videos I've seen dated back to 2014 to 2015 people use the Thanatos and explained they use it for ratting because of the +5% Fighter damage per Gallente carrier level. But would any carrier do as of now for those activities? I realize with changes coming to capitals it might all change real fast though.

Pretty much any carrier can tank WH sites / Anoms ect. You just lose 25% DPS so why would you.

Yes but that's for getting the escalation waves, you won't get any in a Heaven or Sanctum no matter how many capitals you bring.

Calm down miner. As you pointed out, people think they can get away with stuff they would not in rl... Like for example illegal mining... - Ima Wreckyou*
